Wine threads for BWE DC 2020 -- what are you bringing?

Post by marcs »

I thought it would be useful to start a separate thread to discuss what wines people are bringing for the dinners on Friday the 6th and Saturday the 7th

For me, I am thinking of bringing four bottles to the Saturday dinner, all from 2000:

2000 Pichon Baron, Lynch Bages, Leoville Poyferre, and Grand Puy Lacoste. Possibly also Sociando Mallet because what the hell, right?

A little more divided on the Friday dinner. Trying to decide among the following

2006 Blain-Gagnard Batard Montrachet
2006 and 2007 Fevre Chablis Vaudesir
2010 Jadot Latricieres Chambertin
2002 and 2005 Bouchard Le corton

Planning on three bottles total out of those 6, suggestions welcomed!

P.S. for Saturday I am also kicking around the idea of bringing one or two additional Pichon Barons to pair with the 2000 Pichon Baron, maybe a mini-vertical as I have the 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2016 available. Let me know if anyone wants to team up on such a vertical.

Marcus why don’t you let me bring a couple bottles of 2000 Pichon Baron, as my 2000 options are otherwise limited.

So marcs, good start.

It is always a tough thing to decide. I will normally have 2 bottles of 2000 Chateau Léoville Barton for Saturday, as BWE started in 2000.

For the rest, I'll update when I made a choice. I'm also looking for a good dry white for Friday.

Marcus:

For Saturday night, why don't I bring two bottles of 2000 Pichon Baron, or one bottle each of 2000 Pichon Baron and 2000 Sociando Mallet. Just let me know which combination you prefer. Did I read something about a blind tasting on Saturday night?

As for Friday night, I'm happy to bring some of my fancy 2008 New Hampshire Liquor Store Champagne to start off, including 2008 Cristal and 2008 Dom Perignon. Unless you and/or David have already made plans for Friday night Champagne. I'll bring a red for dinner as well.

Tom, I am thinking of low-powered wines for two luncheons; probably

2012 St Innocent Momtazi Special Selection
2012 Jadot Héritiers Corton-Charlemagne
2008 St Innocent Shea Special Selection
2014 Drouhin-Vaudon Bougros Chablis
I always bring an SI Momtazi for lunch with Jim and he doesn't have the SS.

For Friday I plan on Hermitage:
2007 Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle
1995 Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle
1999 Tardieu-Laurent Hermitage

Saturday is all Bordeaux, of course:
1990 Ausone
1982 La Lagune
1990 Mouton

My last 1990 FG; I have been saving them for this convention.

Cool, Jim! Why don’t you bring two bottles of the 2000 Pichon Baron, and I will bring the Lynch, the Leoville Poyferre, and one or two other (non-2000) vintages of the Pichon Baron for a bit of a vertical? Maybe 01 and 05, or maybe 16 for some infanticide since it is supposed to be the Best Vintage Ever and all

No clue what I’m bring Friday - I prefer to surprise everyone and myself, but I would probably bank on some Burg and maybe a Jacquesson in Mag.

Saturday still have to see what I can dig up from storage but definitely planning on a 3L of 1986 Pichon Lalande and a few others.

Looking forward to it!

Friday
We could use more Champagne Jim. I was planning to bring a bottle of 2004 Blanc de Millenaires. I could bring 2. We are at 18 people. Could go up to 20 if Noah's friends Kat and Robert join.

I plan to bring:
2004 Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millénaires
1990 Olga Raffault Chinon Les Picasses
2000 Chave Hermitage
1989 Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle to go with Stefan's

Saturday
6 mystery bottles for blind tasting. I’ll try to get these poured right at the start while hors d'oeuvres are going around so we can get to them after Champagne but before chaos ensues.

Maybe a 2005 Climens?

My plan is to bring:

Friday: 2x 2007 Valentini Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, 1945 Château Prieuré du Monastir del Camp Rivesaltes + TBD
Saturday: Magnum 1990 Belle Epoque, 2 x 2000 Lur-Saluces. I'll bring a 76 pichon baron, 90 Figeac, or 70 La Gaffiere. In case we dont need the 2nd bottle of Ygrec.

Shaping up great as always! Eric, the two 2000 Ygrec will be an interesting match for the foie gras option in the third course.

My cellar is younger than many others, but I am now thinking I may bring some 2005s to match 2000s, so perhaps:

2000 Lynch Bages and Leoville Poyferre
2000 and 2005 Grand Puy Lacoste
2005 Pichon Baron (to match with the 2000s that Jim is bringing)

Still very unsure about what to bring on Friday night. Do people like the white Burgundy / Chablis idea or would they prefer reds? Also now thinking about bringing a 1999 Togni on Friday just because I always like turning people on to Togni.

Marcs, personally I prefer bubbles for starters.
I do like Chablis and it might go better with the halibut than reds.
Not a fan of white Bordeaux, Haut Brion Blanc the notable exception to the rule. :)
Love Togni.

So far we have ten bottles of 2000 red Bordeaux committed for Saturday, let's be sure to have a good turnout on 2000 given it's our anniversary year:

2*2000 Pichon Baron (Jim)
2*2000 Leoville Barton (Nicklass)
1*2000 Lynch Bages (me)
1*2000 Leoville Poyferre (me)
1*2000 Grand Puy Lacoste (me)
1*2000 Sociando Mallet (me)
1*2000 Pontet Canet (Lonnie)
1*2000 Canon La Gaffeliere (Lonnie)
_______________________

10 bottles

Also of course Stefan's two great 1990s (thanks Stefan!)

If you need 2000s, I can bring a 1-2 bottles of 2000 Leoville Barton and also lower growth chateau like Château Haut-Bages Libéral if you need more 2000s. Especially since its looking like we will have plenty of champagne for saturday even without my mag of Belle Epoque.

Mag of Belle Epoque always appreciated :-). But you are right that 2000 reds are more needed. The 2000 Leoville Barton would be great considering we have had some good discussions on that wine on the board recently. I think I or others could bring another LB vintage as well for yet another mini-vertical.

[Edited -- very sorry I somehow overlooked that Nicklass was bringing the Leoville Barton! Sorry, have corrected!]

OK, since there looks to be more of a need for 2000 Bordeaux than Champagne I'll work out a trade with Bob and Barb for a couple of bottles of 00 Bordeaux. Preferences for right or left bank?

BTW I will also be bringing one bottle each of 2005 Pichon Baron and 2005 Grand Puy Lacoste to match with the 2000s of those wines.

Great that Noah is bringing the 89 Pichon Baron so we will have 89-2000-2005

No worries ericindc and marcs.

The thing is that if you want to bring more 2000 Léo Barton, i can probably drink slowly a full bottle with MC!

Ok, now I need to focus on Friday. MC is twisting my arm for a wine I should bring but i saw on Wine Searcher it is not available on the US store this site is covering. As she is attending, I think I won't have the choice...

Sadly just found out that my friend Mark won't be able to attend due to a family friend passing and funerals and such to attend on Saturday and Sunday. Sorry for unforeseen last minute cancelation.

Here are my options for Saturday, would love some input as to what you guys think I should bring. They are all currently standing up for sediment waiting to be drunk.
Would probably prefer to bring one of each vintage.

Options:
1990 Pichon Baron
1990 Leoville Las Cases(2000 not an option because its tucked away in storage and I won't have time to get it out/stand up for sediment)
1990 Rauzan Segla

2000 Rauzan Segla
2000 Grand Puy Lacoste
2000 Peby Faugeres

Also have a 375ML of 2001 doisy vedrines I will probably add just for fun

Let me know if anything sticks out to anyone!

Sounds like I'll plan on the 1990 pichon and 1990 LLC, have been meaning to try both anyways and this group and event sounds like the perfect place to do so! Sad I don't have any better 2000s though

Thoughts on double decanting a couple hours before the event?

Joel, while most 1990s should be good to go on pop and pour, this is Notorious LLC: notorious for slow development. I haven't had one for about 10 years (and it wasn't ready then), so no useful personal experience. Recent CT notes from palates I trust suggest well-stored bottles open up in 1-2 hours. Given the nature of our events, I would double decant just before coming to Bistro Cacao or shortly after arriving, as it will be about an hour between arrival at 6:30 and getting into dinner and the red wines.

Thanks David,
Yes I was thinking something along those lines as well. But you think just PNP for the pichon? I was also considering sediment shaking around when transporting the bottles etc. Probably just over tentative due to the 60's Barolo's I have had recently
