Trotanoy vertical in Copenhagen on the 6th March 2020

Post by greatbxfreak »

Friday the 6th March was the day, true Trotanoy day, with 8 participants, could have had 3 more. 23 vintages of Trotanoy back to 1964 and one second wine of Trotanoy. One champagne, 26 reds and one top Bordeaux sweet wine to finish the extravaganza. This event took place at cosy restaurant Palægade in the center of Copenhagen, close to Hotel d'Angleterre. One of the best wine sommeliers in Denmark, Simon Olesen, handled in perfect way opening and decanting the wines.

We started with Ayala Cuvee Perle 2002, a splendidly fresh and tasty champagne, which had fine acidity and complexity. 92p. Afterwards it was Trotanoy time only "interrupted" by a few ringers. We knew which wines were coming in which flight but not the order of serving them. I'll list here flights and comment on "ringers" or dark horses.

Flight 1 - 2012-2014
Flight 2 - 2001-2004-2008
Flight 3 - 1916
Flight 4 - 2010 Esperance de Trotanoy (second wine)-2010-2000-2005
Flight 5 - 1998-2000 Le Bon Pasteur-2009-2015
Flight 6 - 1929 La Louviere (DK bottling)-1990-1985-1982
Flight 7 - 1970-1978-1983
Flight 8 - 1964-1966-1971-1975

2000 Le Bon Pasteur did great job and wasn't far from 1998 Trotanoy. Lacked though flamboyance and elegance of the forementioned. 94p.

1929 La Louviere was very recognisable because of oyster and salty flavour. Utterly impressive wine for a 91 years old, vigorous and lively. Danish bottling! 96p.

At the end of the tasting dinner, we were treated by an outstanding 2001 Climens with awesome richness, acidity and complexity. 98p.

All in all an outmost memorable and entertaining tasting with outstanding Trotanoys!!

For those patient enough to read my profile of Trotanoy and TNs from the tasting - https://www.greatbordeauxwines.com/chat ... l/trotanoy

Sensational!

One of my favorite of all wines. Just had the 1998 a few weeks ago. An amazing wine.

Really nice report. I loved your description of the property. Trotanoy is also one of my favorites. The 1982 and 1998 were awesome wines but I had only a couple and drank them years ago. I wish I’d bought more. Now it’s gotten pretty pricey. I have a few 2005 and 2014 in the cellar. Sounds like the 2005 is already drinking well.

Love Trotanoy and still have a few 2000,04 & 05 left. The 98 was superb and I had a bottle of the 2000 2 years ago and felt it was still too young. quite a lineup that you had.
I'm surprised with the timing that you were still able to get together at a restaurant on March 6 or was it held just before the restrictions were put in place if any in Copenhagen??. Our last dinner in Ottawa with friends and truly felt like the last supper with everyone on high alert and uncertain we should be out was March 14th and restaurants closed the following weekend.

I sold a large part of my own collection in September, and as I was looking at what I had kept, I found to my surprise much of it was Right Bank traditionaL Bordeaux. And the two largest holdings were Trotanoy and VCC.i am planning a couple of verticals to pick out a favorite, but my guess my preference will be for the VCC. When I have tasted recent vintages, I find that I prefer the sex appeal of it over the sterner Trotanoy, but that may be a function of the age of the wine. I will certainly be adding some old vintages, and I am looking forward to seeing which comes out on top.

Greatbxfreak, Great report on a tremendous Pomerol. I did not had Trotanoy often, but i like the serious style of that complex wine.

I went through 3 bottles of the 2004 in the last years and liked it a lot fot is perfect Pomerol elegance and complexity. And I agree, will be better with a few more years.

The 1989 that was opened at the Thursday dinner in SF in 2017 was great.

I think i also had the 1966 and 1970 in big BWE gathering, but my memory is failling about these two.

On a side note, i guess you had good pour of each vintages, as only 8 participants, and this is very important with Trotanoy. Trying to evaluate that wine with 50 mL is probably kind of frustrating.

Mark i like the right bank Bordeaux for the same reasons you mentioned, but actually prefer the Trotanoy because it does in fact have a more stern structure but also the softness of the Merlot ...it'st just the the best of both worlds....we have discussed a tentative tasting this fall in NYC with Jacques and Jim who have already shown interest....Would be great if you can join...Hopefully this dreadful disease will be dealt with before the leaves start to fall in NY...

Le Bon Pasteur is a sneaky good Pomerol that has always surpassed my expectations...I've been searching the 2016 Le Bon Pasteur but haven't seen any locally....hoping to score some this summer

Thanks for comments guys.

Danny,

It was just one week before restaurants got closed. So I was lucky.

It was my fourth attempt to hold a tasting dinner and I lost some money on it, but nevermind. Company was great!

I've learned a lot about Trotanoy. It keeps it style and it was so evident while tasting all vintages. 1916, probably a Bordeaux negociant/Dutch bottling was a curiosity and 1995 was corked, but others really did sing.

Thanks Izak for your very enthusiastic notes on this legendary estate.

I attended a vertical of Trotanoy with Edouard Moueix back in June.

The stand out wine for current drinking was the 2000, but the star of the show was the 2009, clearly better than the 2005, 2010 and 2015, though the latter may have been an off bottle. The 2016 was sensational too, a synthesis of all that was good with the others.

The 1998 same across as still youthful, powerful and brooding, with its best years ahead. But I would love to own the 1998, 2000, 2009 and 2016 if I could afford them..

Ian,

Big surprises for me were 2008 and 1983. 2009 I thought wasn't up to 2010 and 2015, let 2005. I believe I purchased it same place as 2015, 14, 12 and 10.

Old vintages like 1964, 1971 and 1975 were briliant, as was 1982. They all confirm with aplomb the great longevity Trotanoy has! 2000 had it all and confirmed the utter greatness of this vintage in Pomerol. Much better than 2001, which some wine writers claim to exceed 2000 vintage.

Cool about the 2008, just by reading the report, looks like one to grab.

As I do some searching . . . .
