I might be able to wriggle out of this... I tried to pay for this lot but K&L's software wouldn't let me as it claimed they cannot ship to any of the addresses in my profile including Wyoming (where I've had to send my K&L shipments for the last 3 years, as Colorado was cut off a while ago). So I called and they told me that as of 5/18, Wyoming and several other states were now also cut off as well. They're down to about 7-8 states they can ship to. Basically, this means K&L is dead to me now, unless I can pickup orders in person (or find a friend to), pay CA sales tax, and then figure out a (probably illegal and definitely pricey) way to ship the wine back to CO myself. What a PITA!

Bottomline -- this is likely to be a huge boon to my cellar reduction efforts.

My last buy was a case (12 OWC) of Ch Coutet Barsac 2015.
I am often ambivalent about Sauternes/Barsac.
I sometimes do not even think of it for long periods, then get a craving for it.
I have some 2009 and 2010's that are starting to drink well.

Will have to make some fruit tarts and cakes to go with it all.

Pierre dM always a solid choice, I really enjoyed the Ormes 2017, it was a lot better than Capbern in my opinion.
Reminds me that I will also need to put in an order, here we have that 15% off deal most of the times I order.

2014 is a terrific vintage in Barbaresco, despite being ho hum in Barolo, and despite only being ten miles away, so you did well, grasshopper.

The smoke has cleared, and I'm 'stuck' with the 2014 Produttori and a 5 bottle lot of the 1973 Sterling Cabernet. Won these just under the wire before the shipping ban goes into effect. The Sterlings have sensational fills for 48 year old wines (all base neck or higher), but 4 of them have signs of past seepage, so who knows? These were quite reasonable in price ($58/each all-in) for such a heralded wine, so it seemed worth the gamble.

Yeah, as soon as I bid, I regretted it as I never bid on wines with seepage (unless it’s an off dry german). My better judgement was briefly overruled by the great fills, the low reserve price ($42 each), the wine’s reputation, and most of all because it’s my bro’s birthyear and 1973 is basically is one of the worst wine birth years out there as only in Cali can you find anything halfway decent (and 73 cali cabs are very rare at this point).

If even two of the bottles show well, probably worth it.

Chris, If you can get the Ch Chantegrive 16 still up there, buy some, I really enjoyed it, great fruit, I ended up buying 3 more bottles which is a lot for me. Not the greatest wine of course but really good QPR for my taste.

What I learned from today’s HDH auction:
I put in a bid for a lot, about 20% over the estimate, by absentee bid a few days ago.
Me: “It’s HDH so that’s probably not enough but damn that’s a sh!t ton of money.”
Me: “I can always increase my bid if I lose my sanity.”
I decided to watch the auction live this morning for my amusement.
The opening bid on the lot is my maximum bid.
Auctioneer, slight embellishment: “Going once, going twice, you realize this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for this incredibly rare wine.”
Me: “It looks good, no one is outbidding me, this will be the Crown Jewel of my collection, I can’t wait to taste it.”
Me: “Just to be sure, should I bid against myself to guarantee what I am seeing is real? I know they won’t let me pay more than I should.”
Me: “Nah, that’s stupid, you already won the lot.”
Auctioneer, a few seconds later: “ Seeing no advance, the lot is won by Paddle #xxx.”
Screen: It doesn’t say “You Won!” but it doesn’t say “You Lost” either. I can’t remember my paddle number for sure but it looks right.
Me: “That’s odd, maybe I better check a different screen.”
Screen #2: You Lost, a**hole.
Checked my lot number, it’s slightly different from the winner's lot number.

Lesson: if you want to make sure you win a lot which is at your maximum, bid against yourself anyway, assuming you’re willing to add one bidding interval to your absentee bid.

Me: “Damn it, I’ll just have to buy something else I want from another website out of revenge.”

jckba, do you find Blacksmith honest and reliable? The reputation seems questionable. A couple of years ago, I sent them an email asking if I could visit them in person but never got a response. Their inventory and pricing is amazing.

Stu, I am friends with the owner Mark Mancinelli and I think the trouble was he was understaffed for a long time but he now has 2 first rate somms managing the place in both Charles Puglia (formerly of Jean Georges, Blue Hill and Le Coucou) and Kristie Petrullo (Eleven Madison, Daniel, Craft and Jean Georges) so needless to say they know a thing or two about fine wine. The couple of times I have bought something older or where there was an issue with one of the bottles, they have sent me pictures to confirm if I was alright with the condition. I’ve also visited the store location (which is not really a store) to pick up orders as I am about 45 minutes away and they have always been welcoming and have even blinded me on bottles of wine before. And let me know the next time you are over this way and I’ll join you.

Snagged a case of 2015 Meo Camuzet Chambolle that was on hold by a restaurant for 3 years which made its way into open inventory for $53.09/btl from Allied within the New Jersey wholesale system. Village level happiness.

Hart Davis Hart Wine Co., the #1 wine auction house in the U.S., continued its success in 2021 with a tremendous May auction that brought in a total of $5.9 million against pre-sale estimates of $3.4-5.2 million. These record results were due to the passionate bidding seen throughout the sale from bidders around the globe, bringing 83% of lots to sell above their high estimate. I think i had the Henriot brut Souverain too with JeanFred in the last year... i have a feeling i bought a bottle because i liked it.
