La Conseillante 2014 on sale. While I still think BD got it wrong selecting it over 2014 VCC, it is a damned good wine.

Wholesale pricing here on the 2014 Conseillante has changed from $90-$120 here in the metro NYC area about a year ago to $130-$150 today so there is now doubt that we started buying when the getting was good as change in style / new winemaker aside, La Conseillante is on the move.

I think it was just a delay. Sometimes wines from semi current vintages get forgotten about. I see that with the 2014 Haut Bailly right now. It still appears somewhat available near release price. What do you see that going for wholesale?

I have lost my discipline lately been on a mini binge buying spree - it is not as though I don’t have enough wine

6 x 2006 Cascina Baricchi, Barbaresco, Quindicianni Riserva
6 x 2015 Cascina Baricchi, Barbaresco, Rose Delle Casasse, Riserva

This is a bit of an insiders tip: These are the wines of Natale Simonetta – Cascina Baricchi in Barbaresco.

Formerly a professional motocross rider, an accident in his early 20s forced Natale to retire, and he decided to move back to Barbaresco where his father had bought an estate in 1979. He was bitten by the wine bug, and trained by Bruno Giacosa.

He sold wine to Giacosa, including for his vaunted, incredibly rare, and one-off 1990 Barbaresco Red Label Riserva – the only time Giacosa ever produced a non-single vineyard Red Label.

The Rose delle Casasse is from a tiny site in Neive, using the Nebbiolo Rose clone. Baricchi is the only Barbaresco producer using the Nebbiolo Rose clone for one of their bottlings. About 1/3 of the vineyard comes from vines planted in 1913, and the balance have been planted in the late 2000s using massale selection from the original 1913 ones.

The Riserva Quindicianni spends another 10 years in the bottle (hence why the name which means fifteen years), and is a blend of fruit from Casasse and Roncaglie.

- 6 x Gevrey Chambertin, Alain Voegeli, 2020 - another off the radar and upcoming producer - I have been buying since the 2017 vintage and still only £40 on the table..

I also bought some wines from a cellar in France - a friend’s father in law generally ~20-25% below market:

- 6 x Lynch Bages 2006
- 3 x Duhart 2010
- 1 x La Lagune 1975

Joel, current 2014 Haut Bailly wholesale here in the metro
NYC area is between $84 and $90 so agree there can sometimes be a lag but when you know what the replacement costs are, you can kind of guess where it is heading.

Ian, thanks for the info on the Baricchi as it recently changed distribution here in the metro NYC area from MHW to Polaner so at the beginning of June when my Polaner rep said he grabbed me a case, I took it home the next day. I am guessing that this will become an allocated item in the not to distant future, ie like next year when the 2016’s get here.

That’s a quite a haul, Comte (and jckba too) regarding Cascina Baricchi. Awesome stuff...

For the story, I would add that— Marchesi di Grey Martinenga is also made from Nebbiolo Clone, but I believe this barbaresco is a blend, and uses upto 20 to 25 percent of the Nebbiolo clone. I never had this barbaresco, but heard good things about it...

Regarding Cascina Baricchi, I had the 2015 Rose delle Casasse version of this, maybe couple of months ago. Although I loved the goodies it had, I felt it was in its slumber and needed a lot of coaxing.

I wouldn’t touch it for another 5 years atleast...

Saw the 2019 Roulot Bourgogne Aligote pop up as a new arrival at a somewhat local store so I hopped on Wine-Searcher Pro and found it for $39.99 @ Convive Wines in NYC and then signed up for their email list which netted me a 15% discount and I lifted the 9 bottles they had left for a $33.15/per + tax.

I’ve well and truly run out of storage space and my office looks like a cellar door operation with boxes and bottles all over the place. However I just had a delivery of 2019 Justin Girardin burgundies - chassange Montrachet Clos St Jean Rouge, Savigny Les Beaune 1er Cru and a few Santenays.

Also bought a case of 2019 Chateau Galius St Emilion GC after finding the 2016 to be a good QPR buy.

Thinking of going to a live auction on Sunday which is full of Bordeaux and Burgundy though realistically there are very few people bargains to be had any more. Prices for good vintages such as 2000, 2005, 2009 and 2010 have escalated in the last few years. Oh well.

1 more each of:
1985 Leoville Las Cases
1985 Lynch Bages

1985 is starting to become one of my favorite Bordeaux vintages. Possibly eclipsing 1989, but probably not. Maybe I've just had great luck/examples

Yes Joel. Lot of the Sancerre offering here have 13.5-14% alcohol. Personnally, i think it is abit too ripe.

Ihad the 2020 Jean-Max Roger Sancerre lately, at 14 %, while good it was my least favorite.

Had some Reverdy, Mollet, and Cédrick Bardin that were all better.

Will probably open a Dauny tonight. Only 12.5 %.

Another tasty 2018 Cantemerle, to share with a friend next week.

RE Sancerre, while I have a state liquor system (monopoly) to deal with, they’ve had a very decent selection (and decently priced) in the 13 and under ABV class. Love ’em.
