Re: Is 2016 TOO perfect?
Ha indeed, we'll have to share a fine northern Medoc or two at some point, Ognik!
I do sense that 2016 is already closing down. I have had three bottles of the splendid 2016 Tour St. Christophe, the most recent seemed to be shutting down. (Again, of the three magnificent recent vintages of Tour St. Christophe, I have enjoyed the 2014 over the 2015 and 2016).

Hey, you like what you like, I have no problems with that.
If you told me you disagreed with experts and the 2016 wines were not as good at the same 2014s, fine. Your palate. I respect that.
I find it strange to criticize a wine because it’s too good. That’s all.

Re: Is 2016 TOO perfect?
2016 is like the Aaron Rogers of Bordeaux vintages. Everything pretty, not a hair out of place. But, when it comes to the finish, eh...
Lamar Jackson is like the 2015 Margaux vintage... velvety, elegant, powerful...

Lamar Jackson is a 2016 red Bordeaux. Aaron Rodgers is an expensive California Cabernet, way too expensive for what you got.
Come on Jim, you have to taste the 2016 Chateau La Lagune to tell us that you prefer the 100 % cabernet sauvignon 2013 Chateau La Lagune. Or in relation with your other thread, you should always spit the TOO perfect 2016 red Bordeaux and always swallow the excellent 2014 red Bordeaux. But I guess you have some hope, as you bought 120 bottles of the soulless 2016, when you could have bought an extra 240 bottles of the excellent 2014 instead, red Bordeaux with lot of personnality.

Re: Is 2016 TOO perfect?
I have a probably contentious thought/observation:
I’ve found many* 2015 Bordeaux more ‘exciting’ than their 2016 counterparts.
I am pretty sure that 2016 overall is a better year than 2015 for my palate, but for drinking young, 2015 has been more fun, interesting and head-turning that the 16s. For current consumption, the highs are higher in 2015 but the lows are lower (?). It’s perhaps like 89 vs 90, in that 89 is clearly superior in my experience but that advantage took 25 years to become fully evident.
* As many as 10-12 chateau.

Re: Is 2016 TOO perfect?
I think I agree.
Certainly there can be no question 2015 Margaux is compelling.
Look, in any event, the 2014/2015/2016 trio for me are going to be great to drink after two or three blanquitos in my seventies.
I'm happy to have about 450 bottles from those three vintages in my cellar.

Re: Is 2016 TOO perfect?
I got 2015 Rauzan Segla for $75 en futuro from MacArthur's.
Unfortunately it costs more than that now.

Curious what you think about 2014. I follow you on CT and I didn't find any notes about 2014 or 2015 like your in-depth, thoughtful essay on 2016.Blanquito wrote:I have a probably contentious thought/observation:

Re: Is 2016 TOO perfect?
Thanks Marcus, like you and others, I am a big fan of the 2014. That bottle of 14 Calon Segur that Jim opened a few years ago was sooo good. I’ve liked lots of others too.
I think I am reluctant to sing 2014’s praises because the pricing was so attractive and I think that might have me biased. But I think 14 is a classic in the making and certainly the best between 05–15.
Like Jim says, choosing between the like of 14-15–16 is a good problem to have!

Folks
I like a few others was determined not to buy 2016 en primeur.
But I could not resist and was prodded by the rave reviews and not to be ignored, the strength of the Singapore dollar at the time.
The only 2016wines I have tried are cheaper supermarket wines but they have been pretty good and richer and more intense than 2015.
However I am not thinking of opening them for some years.
It may be that the fruit intensity masks complexity at this point but I am confident that like 2005 they will develop well.
I have tried a few Cru Bourgeois wines from both 2015 and 2016 and do far I’d rate 2016 as better at that level. In fact I am not convinced that 2015 is as good as it is reputed to be. But again time will tell.

Go for 15 Brane Cantenac or 15 Giscours...Just to diversify to get more bang for the buck, as Segla has gone up in price...JimHow wrote:I got 2015 Rauzan Segla for $75 en futuro from MacArthur's.

I did my 2015 buying last year.
I have significant quantities of 15 Brane Cantenac and 15 Giscours.

Re: Is 2016 TOO perfect?
Had a 2016 Clos Marsalette this week.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Hardly changes my tune that these 2016s all taste the same.
They all taste the same! Boring as a '93 Batailley....
