2016 Sociando Mallet

Over the weekend - with a grilled NY Strip, with garlic herb butter (so good!), twice baked potato, haricot vert and grilled onions…

2016 Sociando Mallet – Deep nose of graphite, cedar, a bit of cigar box. With a couple hours in the decanter some cassis and blackberry start to come through, the wine clearly needed more air. Chewy, grippy tannins on the palate with nice acidity to keep you coming back for another sip. Good stuff. Drinkable now with more decanting than I gave it (1 hour, probably needs 4-6hrs). I’d be so bold as to say has the potential to rival the fantastic 1996.

I’ve cracked a 6pack, lets see if can avoid them for a Blanquito! Vegas has long odds on me making it.

I agree, a top Sociando has been produced in 2016.

I'll definitely have to get my hands on this after trying the lovely 2014 recently. So beautiful, fresh and great QPR. Pretty sure Jim and OB repped that one pretty hard. Glad I listened.

I have 21 bottles of the 2016 and 10 bottles of the 2014 in my cellar.
I almost bought more of the 2016 when I was in NH this past weekend, on sale at $38.24.

I’ve already Howed a whole case of the 2014.
You guys just got me to spring for a case of the 2016.
We’ll see how long that lasts.

I haven't tasted my 2016 SM yet. I notice in your description there is no mention of the herbal, green component that at time can be dominant and in some years, overwhelming. Any comments on this issue?

Bill

Bill, I would say the 2016 is one of those Sociandos that is NOT dominated by the green note we see in some Sociandos.

A little green in SM is welcome and expected.

I've had this a few times...just too cookie cutter and glossy for me...made me sad actually, sad that the real Sociando is long gone

I know what you’re saying, BG, but it has great depth of fruit and I think it’s going to develop complexity with age. It’s a fifty year wine.

But there are years when there is much more than a little to my palate.

Agreed. An “Orlando Bobbies” year for Sociando will be too green for many palates.

What did you think about the 2014 then? I found it to be a tad glossy but super sensual and bright fruited as well. Very happy with that and need to try some 2016 soon.

I did not had the 2014, as not many 2014 red Bordeaux made it to here. But the 2016 is a super nice'n' serious Sociando Mallet. The 1996 but a little bit more concentrated, less green, but still very fresh. I love it. 2016 Potensac is no slouch either.

I don't know how long i will keep my hands off my 2016, or Jim's 2016 Mouton...

We will drink one of those 2016 Moutons someday, Nicola, hopefully before we advance to the Great Tasting Room in the Sky, where we shall touch the Happy Isles, and see the great Stefan, whom we knew.... We will drink life to the lees!

Actually never had it.. but I recently split a case of 2012 with Orlando Bobby...I like it,,..def. does take a bit to open up, but its pretty good, has some rusticity, but not like the old days.

OrlBobby loves the '14

I opened another 2000 SM the other night. Served with grilled tuna and chicken. Yes, there was a hint of green, under ripe fruit but the gorgeous cascade of rich flavors made this bottle a great drinker. Could age be diminishing the almost overwhelming greenness found in some bottles????

2016 perfoms nicely, 2019 might be the better wine some day.
