Tom and Gail impromptu stop over in London

Post by Comte Flaneur »

Given labour shortages a lot of my favourite BYO places are closed in London Town on a Monday night.

So I resorted to this excellent Afghan restaurant about a mile and a half from Tom & Gail’s hotel in Paddington (end of the Heathrow Express), on the cusp of the posh and less salubrious parts of northwest London. The resto on the Kilburn High Road was definitely more in the less salubrious part of town. The five minute stroll back to Kilburn underground station after packing T&G into an Uber was like walking through the zombie apocalypse, but it was great to see Tom and Gail after their three week holiday in Greece, looking rather chipper, and reminiscing on past memories, delving into current affairs, BWE combobulations and future possibilities.

T and G are among the loveliest people of BWE. Happy to see that it works for a stop'n'fun'n'wine in London. And comte flaneur seems always ready for BWEers visit. He's kinda cool too :-).

I wish to go to London one day.

It was just a spur-of-the-moment short notice and brief get together as Tom & Gail had an overnight stopover here en route back home from Greece. We only arranged it late last week. I had to be compos mentis to present very early the next day so it was not a hifatulin’ occasion with a lot of fancy wines, but the Etna Rosso was a very nice match for the delicious Afghan food.

Well, on very short notice indeed the Comte came up with a fine venue for catching up, eating Afghan food with which we're not very familiar, and sipping a few fine wines. We were so busy talking and laughing that the wines fell into the background, but here are my very vague impressions...

The Giuseppe Rinaldi Dolcetto was probably the darkest Dolcetto I've ever seen, full bodied for the appellation, consistent with the producer's impeccable reputation. I'm generally not a fan of Dolcetto but if there are more like this one, I could be converted.

The Giovanni Rosso red from Mount Etna on Sicily was really very good with the food. Light bodied with plenty of red fruit. Gail loved this one which is a much better imprimatur than my approval. Ian said he has masses of this wine and I don't think he'll regret it.

Thanks again, Ian, for pulling this together. Well done. Well done, indeed!

Cheers,
Tom and Gail

And nice quick report. I have to find of these Rinaldi wines to try.

And i've been drinking more 2019 Terra Nere Etna Rosso lately. Very good wine.
