Last night I took the family to Chez Panisse in Berkeley to celebrate my 46th wedding anniversary and my daughter 40th birthday. I brought a 1982 GPL from the cellar to celebrate. My daughter was born in 1982 so it was appropriate. I purchased this wine in 1984 and it's been with me for many a year. I bought the 1982 vintage heavily. This was one of the last bottles from that vintage.

The wine was perfect. No official notes but it was beautifully structured and balanced. Tannins resolved but a wonderful backbone of acidity and even a touch of fruit. It had that book leather nose so familiar to older Bordeaux. Medium bodied. It did not fall a part as we sipped it with our meal. Nice finish. Memorable wine. This is why we have cellars.

Nice one Bill.

Nineteen eight two - such a great vintage and still crushing it.

Congratulations to you, your wife and your daughter. It was good that you weren’t celebrating your 40th wedding anniversary and her 46th birthday.

Congrats!

I have one lone bottle of this in the cellar and have been wondering whether or not to open. Sounds like a perfect wine to share for a next special occasion!

We’ll done, William P, and congratulations on your celebrations. When 1982 GPL is right, it is a thrilling Pauillac.

Congrats Bill.

Good choice. Classic old Pauillac in the coarse, meaty, rustic and wild herb style. With the right food it’s a perfect choice.

Congratulations, Bill, Linda, and daughter. I lke Chez Panisse almost as much as I like 1982 Bordeaux.

Opened a 1982 GPL last night at an impromptu gathering with some wine friends in Chicago. Sadly my last bottle, but boy was it a beauty.

I’m amazed by the power this wine still had at age 41 - such depth and power but very balanced, tannins resolved, and a very nice mix of fruit and emerging secondary notes. Best part was a friend of mine tasting his first aged Bordeaux - looks over at me after first sip, and says “wow…I get it now”. :D
