BWE Annual 2022?

Post by Michael-P »

Did we miss it or is it still to be organized?

October?

Bordeaux?
San Francisco?
Miami?
DC?

I barely have time to take a leak between now and the end of the year. Stefan is teaching this fall so he can’t come east. We’ve been talking about a possible dinner in DC in October but even that is up in the air because of my trial schedule. Right now I have a three week murder trial scheduled in October. There’s a decent chance it could settle but I don’t know when. It could settle tomorrow or it could settle on October 10th, or any time in between.

I think a London event would be a good shout Michael, but I think 2023 or 2024 would be more likely as London is perfect to join in late Spring early summer…I suspect the exchange rate will be still rather enticing for you folk on the other side of the Atlantic in 2023…beyond 2023 an American civil war may have mixed implications for the dollar’s global reserve currency status.

So yes I am putting a marker down: London 2023? It is too late for 2022. Think Jim maybe under the cosh with being the best-in-class murderer representer in 2022 but we can’t allow 2022 to go by without a convention.

If the mighty Stefan (and his better half, of course) will attend, we will do DC in ‘22.

In the spring we can travel, but probably not in the fall. We would love to go to London in 2023.

London in '23 is indeed intriguing!

If I can settle this murder trial sooner rather than later, I'd be interested in organizing a dinner or two in DC in October, even if it doesn't rise to a full blown convention. I may know the status of my October schedule within the next couple of weeks.

Perth would suit me best, and hopefully the rest of you…?

Will crack something decent that night so it’s not all vicarious.

Hope to meet you at some point Ambrose.
We had a big trip planned to Asia in late 2020 until Covid hit. I would like to get to Australia someday if I can ever get to at least semi-retirement.

Happy to help organize dinners for DC whenever, maybe a mini convention :)

London 2023 sounds like a bunch of fun as well, depending on when.

Likewise Jim, would also love to show off Margaret River etc to a few BWE if anyone does make it over here.

Wouldn’t mind checking out your part of the world at some stage as unlikely as it is - extra hard with two young kids as well. Have a friend who is a professor up at one of the Universities around Boston but he is more of a ‘Natural wine enthusiast’. Also been reading a lot of John Cheever later (any author recommendations along those lines appreciated).

Pretty hard to beat Cheever but if you enjoy him you'll probably like Updike.

Everything is iffy for us, but the weekend after Yom Kippur might work (Oct. 7-10).

My attitude is that we always start with Stefan and work from there. I suggest trying to set something up in October. If my trial settles I can be there. If not, I can’t. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a convention.

Do you know your best time window in October yet, Jim?

Stefan, is that Oct 7-10 your only weekend or is the following an option as well?

Could start at least laying the ground work, putting out feelers at least. Hoping that certain dates pan out.

No Joel but don’t schedule based on my plans.
I would say there’s a 50-50 chance it’ll settle.
If Stefan can make it I say book it!

Joel, there is a good chance that we can make it either of those weekends. It depends on things beyond our control.

Joel/Noah/David/Marcus:
If the great Stefan says he can make either of those weekends, go ahead and book it!
we got kind of a belligerent communication from the normally rational attorney general this afternoon, causing me to reduce the odds of settlement of my murder trial from 50% to 40%.
But still, this should happen, whether I'm there or not.
Somebody needs to check in with MichaelP, he wants to be there.
Nicola can't make it, nor Jal.

Why not shoot for dinners on Friday, Oct 7th, and Saturday Oct 8th, as that is Columbus Day weekend anyway.

I would enjoy October DC convention for sure - but Jim you are such an important presence and It is always great to have Chris available too. November almost always has good weather in DC, how about early November instead?

I would echo Marc’s suggestion for the first weekend in November. I may have a conflict Saturday but would be around Friday night to be sure.

Are folks available then?

I can’t do it in November, and I have my annual first Friday in November dinner with my old law school friends. My schedule is swamped for the next year, but especially through the end of the year. I also think you’re going to find Stefan and others can’t do it in November. My only hope for attending a BWE event between now and the end of the year is if my October murder trial settles.

Sounds like the best dates to try for are the weekend of Oct 14-15. Assuming Chris is back then.

I'm good with any weekend in October except the weekend of the 21st.

Theres also that last weekend. The 28-29th. Does that work better for everyone by chance? Maybe we should create a poll on this.

I could do the weekends of October 14-15 or 28-29. I am definitely not available the weekend of 7-8.

Like to hear others thoughts.

Shoot for Oct 14-15!
If my murder case goes to trial I can’t make it.
If it settles I should be able to get down there for a surgical strike.
