Bordeaux Wine Enthusiasts

I've soaked this in white vinegar and scrubbed with a special brush. Also tried ice and salt. Is there a trick to getting this clean? It comes from the Casino Royale d'Evian, so I would like to restore it.

A long brush and a slurry of salt & water or baking soda & water should be enough to remove the visible stain. Beyond that, Dawn Platinum Powerwash will take off just about all surface spots & etc.

Very easy-bleach and water, let it soak and rinse thoroughly. Save your ducats.

I can confirm that Polident is a miracle cleaner.

I have a problem in that I have a couple of decanters from which I have removed all stains, but the glass remains *cloudy*.

Is there any remedy for getting rid of the couldiness?

There may not be any single fix for cloudiness but I have a couple of heavily used stems which have cloudiness and these are some of the steps I have taken

* boiling water + vinegar, 24 hour soak
* denture cleaner
* clean with rubbing alcohol, or high proof spirits (vodka etc)
* baking soda + (tooth)brush
* Dawn powerwash

Barkeepers Friend is another potential treatment to try but be careful - these are typically oxalic acid types of products mixed with abrasives so they will scratch some materials.

Sometimes the cloudiness is the result of microabrasions, especially if the glass has been through extensive dishwasher cycles. There are particles that bounce around in the water and, when combined with high heat plus pressure, they can abrade the formerly smooth glass/crystal, creating the light dulling that we see as cloudiness.

I know Maximilien Riedel advocates machine washing his crystal, but I think that's driven more by his belief that hand washing leads to more breakage. Everyone has different water hardness as well as machines/settings, so I don't think his 'one size fits all' counsel makes sense, especially for oenophiles. It aggravating, but I have gone to handwashing for the good stems, and only use the dishwasher for coarser (but still useful) stemless ones. Still plenty of glasses get broken in casita AKR, either way, and they can't even be all blamed on the enthusiastic, yet cruel to crystal, sweep of a GSD tail.

Certain cloudiness is in lead crystal and the lead leaches out. I read a while ago how to ameliorate this but the gist of the article was it likely would never return to perfect clearness. I generally avoid using lead crystal decanters for safety and aesthetics.
