I think there's a significant quality difference between some GCCs.
It’s a little more involved. Even-in the Medoc, if it is the same appellation, it is still ok. Montrose incorporated parts of Phelan Segur, Issan added a tiny section of Margaux Cru Bourgeois that Chateau Margaux also wanted etc. The classification is so ossified that nothing makes a different to the status of a chateau.

On paper, Ducru could take over a lesser growth several kilometers away but still in Saint Julien like Lagrange, and it would still be called Ducru.

While that is true, that seldom happens for the Grand Vin. Most of the top estates adding more vines use those grapes in their second and third wines. They still make a lot of money on the transaction, as they can charge more for their second wine than the previous owner was able to garner when producing wines under their own name.
