Wines for BWE 2022

Post by marcs »

Didn't see another thread on this so I'll kick it off.

I'll definitely be bringing some 2002 Mouton Rothschild and Cos d'Estournel. Thinking about 2002 Burgundy (much better vintage than Bordeaux, great vintage actually) for Friday night but I don't have too many.

Not sure what else to bring -- might just bring some fun Pomerol and other wines on general principles, and maybe a few 2014 White Burgundy/Chablis for Friday night. Curious if we start to get some verticals rolling.

BTW the Mouton is one of only six bottles of first growths I own, like one-third of one percent of my collection. That’s how much I love you guys <sob>

2002 Burgs sound good to me for Friday. I'll bring at least one. For Saturday I'll also bring at least one 2002 FG. Haven't thought yet about what else.

If others could bring the 2002 red burgundies I don’t have that would be great. In return I can bring a flight of 2014 white burgundies/chablis to match with blacksalt seafood!

2002 Mouton was great, that time Jimhow brought a bottle in Charlotte. I'm sure Sue and Rob remember.

2002 was the last year first growths were ever under $100 on futures. How I wish I'd loaded up!

I definitely didn't pay less than $100, but I may try to bring one of my 2002 Haut Brion. Or another ringer first growth with a little more age. Only if I get to blind you and MichaelP on it though.

I don't have much 02 Burgundy. Which is sad because I love it and it's in a great spot right now. Otherwise I have a lot of great Champagne I'd like to share. Maybe 02 Piper Rare. Maybe some other regions if anything else develops.

For Saturday, maybe a 1979 or 1986 Pichon Lalande or both.

These are about wines for Friday. I could bring some 2002 red Burgundies. Probably a Laurent Grand Cru and a Magnien 1er or grand cru. But the last savory course is possibly venison, so I could bring an old California Cabernet for that. And lastly I can bring a dessert wine - could be an old Sauternes, or a German Auslese or an old Anerican late harvest Riesling. But want to limit what I and Sandra bring to no more than 3 bottles.

Sorry to miss. The weekend is my son’s birthday party and have family in town. Sad that BlackSalt is literally two blocks from my house. Meh. Maybe next year…

Too bad I can't make it. I went long in 2002 as it was the year we were married. I'd probably bring a magnum of 2002 Latour for the main event and I have a lot of great 2002 Burgundy that would be perfect for Friday.

Maybe next year...

I have no 02 burgs but perhaps an 08 St Innocent-I have two or three designated vineyards. Also some champagne. But it is Friday so anything but Bordeaux. Joel's tasting menu will accommodate a variety of reds I believe.

I don't have any older Burgundies to bring. For Friday, I have a magnum of 1994 Insignia I think I will pop. As well as a 2016 Eisele Sauvignon Blanc and a 2013 Peter Michael Belle Cote to go with the seafood. Although, you all seem to want wines ending in a vintage year 2. So maybe I will switch one of the whites out for a 2002 Christoffel Auslese or a 1992 Zind Heimbourg or a 12 Navarro Gewurtz Cluster Select. For Saturday, I think I will bring an 02 Billecart Louis, an 82 Talbot, and either a 04 Dom De Chevalier Blanc or a 16 Le Petit Cheval Blanc.

I will bring some Bordeaux ending in a "2" for the Saturday. NOT bringing Burgundy for Friday as a protest vote :D Tending to a Champer and Cal Chard for Friday.

On Friday I'll have to sit across the room from MichaelP and Harry, who cannot stand to be close to open bottles of PN. Probably I'll bring 2002 Ponsot Charmes-Chambertin and 2002 Clos des Lamprays, neither of which I have tasted because I only have a couple of bottles of each and didn't want to drink them prematurely. I also intend to bring a bottle of 1999 Burgundy for contrast. The 1999s have finally begun to come around. For 2002 Bordeaux on Saturday, I am leaning toward Lafite and VCC. Or maybe Pichon Baron instead of VCC.
EDIT 10/21. I decided to bring the other two 2002 Pauillac FG to match with Marcus' Mouton.
Friday Saturday
2002 Clos des Lambrays 2002 Lafite
2002 Ponsot Charmes-Chambertin 2002 Latour
1999 Jadot Corton 2002 Vieux-Chateau-Certan

Holy shit Stefan I’m sitting next to you too! Drooling over that 2002 Clos Des Lambrays!

Going to bring a 1992 Togni on Friday night along with potentially a 2014 white burg

2002 Mouton Rothschild and Cos d’Estournel on Saturday

No red Burgs in the cellar, and no Bordeaux ending in “2.”
I may be theme-divergent, but I should have something drinkable to bring.

Probably a Napa cab (I have a 2002!) and a sweet-ish German Riesling Friday.

Still mulling over Saturday wines.

Marcus, Friday is “Anything but Bordeaux.” Are you sure Togni qualifies? I think you brought one of those ‘92s to a Friday Bistro Bis BWE event a few years ago, and it was killer!

Hopefully this doesn't mess with anyone's thoughts on what they're bringing for Friday night, however we had to make a venue change. Link below. If anything, I think this menu will suit most wines better.

Me bringing Togni to Friday nights is becoming a tradition! I think I brought the 99 Togni to a Friday night just before the pandemic and it was killer, then I brought the 01 on Friday night for our last BWE DC and it was solid but perhaps a bit disappointing. The 1992 is the best Togni I personally have ever had so I have high hopes for this one!

Ah, yes, it was the ‘99 Togni you brought that I’m remembering, and it was a killer! Have you ever had the ‘91 or ‘94? They’re up there with the ‘92. I haven’t had them in ages, but suspect they’ve aged well.

I'm mulling either a Loire, Napa, or Spanish magnum on friday. Unfortunately, i don't have many Burgundy magnums. Debating a couple other '00 mags for saturday, maybe Calon Segur or Pichon Baron. Probably a couple mags of champagne as backups.

On Friday night, I plan to bring a white Burgundy, a California cab or cab-blend and something else that most of you have never had.

On Saturday night, I plan to bring Bordeaux from 1982 and 1979 (in honor of Tom and Gail’s recent anniversary).

Probably bring Champagne both night.

I’m locking in 2014 Boillot Moucheres and 1992 Togni for Friday night

Except if anyone prefers a 2014 PYCM Chassagne Caillerets instead of the Boillot then let me know…

Sticking with the 02 Mouton and Cos for Saturday. Bordeaux, baby!

Just a week away, I’m excited!

Just getting around to thinking about it.
I'll bring some Dom Perignon and Billecart Salmon champagne on both Friday and Saturday nights, not sure of the vintages yet.
I'd like to go for a Champagne run to MacArthur's in case anyone wants to come by for Champagne in the room.
Not sure yet what I'll bring for reds on Friday and Saturday nights.
