2019 Rauzan Segla Uncorked

Post by PghMike »

Let the experiment begin. Will update over the next 24 hours or so. I'm very inexperienced with predicting where a bordeaux will go, but I'll try to be as descriptive as possible.

At Cork pop:
Color is a beautiful royal purple.
Nose of macerated blue berries and a woodiness of oak or mahogany with some earthy or mustiness like the smell of a wine cellar. Tannins chalky, but not harsh or drying. First sips felt a little warm. Medium in body and glides through the palate but not in a glossy way. Stony/mineral, menthol, cherry, red plum. Finish really lingers.

So far my only concern is the potential heat, but nothing overbearing here. 14.5 abv.

Rich for sure but suspect the Rauzan is lighter than the Marquis de Calon.

This puppy is leaving a deep purple film inside my glass.
It is big on the palate after two sips.

I've got six bottles of 2019 Rauzan Segla that I'm waiting for from Zachys.
There was a time early on that folks like Musigny151 and others were very enthusiastic about this wine.

True and the description here is vaguely familiar.

About three hours in, from decanter that I poured about 1/3 of the bottle into.

A little less fruit on the nose with some eucalyptus coming out. Feeling more structured on the palate. A little more darkness to the fruit with some spice emerging, perhaps nutmeg and clove. Maybe a touch of heat, less than what I detected at pop and pour. A nice evolution so far even with a few hours.

Will report in on tomorrow's status. Leaving a little less than half in the bottle over night.

No major changes in almost 24 hours in bottle but some nice improvement for sure. The more menthol and cherry cough drop heavy finish has improved to one with more depth and the fruit lingers longer. Still might be a touch of heat but barely perceptible. I love the medium+ body, the acidity and the very present but not overpowering tannin.

So far I'd say this is a very solid wine. Rating now perhaps 93 as i can definitely drink this today - but it is clearly too soon. Rating in the future ?? - but I'm glad to have five more bottles. Will leave them for at least 3-5 years though.

Well done, Mike, I have 6 of them coming from Zachys at some point.
I'm still thinking about the Calon Segur second label last night, it was a beauty.

Hopefully someday I get my 2019 Calon's from Zachys. Did you get a response from them? They told me early 2023.

I did hear back from them, they’re still waiting on my Montrose and Rauzan Segla. They’ve got the Calon Segur second wine at $34 but on pre arrival. The price is good but I’ll wait til I find it at a similar price in stock.

Sad story about Sherry Lehman; I was not aware of developments during the last 10-15 years. My very limited experience with them was when I lived in Manhattan for about 4 months in 1999 while working on a project there. I used to go to the store to buy a few bottles to stock the apartment.
