BWE London 2023: Cafe Murano, Pastificio Covent Garden, March 23

Post by Comte Flaneur »

I think we agreed loosely on an Italian theme for the Thursday dinner but that is just a guideline and may be we can include Spanish wines as well?

Attendees and wines which will be constantly updated. Michael P’s nephew Stefan will be attending plus two of my London Wine friends, the two I visited Piedmont with back in October.

1. Ian - 2021 Stefano Zoli Verdicchio di Matelica, 1996 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto and 2010 Canonica Barolo Paiagallo 2010 (magnum)
2. Jim
3. Tim
4.Patrick - 1999 San Giusto a Rentennano 'Percarlo' Sangiovese Toscana IGT 1999
5&6 MichaelP and Nalan - 1998 Aldo Conterno Il Favot Langhe Nebbiolo, 2000 La Spinetta Barbaresco Vigneto Starderi
7. Alex - 2016 GD Vajra Barolo Coste Di Rose
8. Nic - two mystery Barolos
9&10 Tom and Gail - two whites and a Barolo
11.HM$ - 2000 Cavallotto Bricco Boschis Riserva and a dessert wine
12&13 Joel and Daniela
14 Stefan

Fizz: Philipponnat Royale Réserve Non Dosé

Ed - I suppose you could join on Thursday and restrict yourselves to two glasses of wine, though that might in reality be hard to stick to?

We'll bring Barolo, Barbaresco, or possibly other Italian Nebbiolo.

Do we have a start time?
We land LGW at 230p on Thurs 23 March, so should be good for normal dinner times.

Christine and I met up off the M25 to exchange some BWE champagne, 12 bottles in total

I would suggest that for this event we utilise the four bottles of Phillipponnat royal reserve

Then on the Friday have the Jacquesson 742 and on the Saturday we have the DP and Cristal 2008

Just to update - we have more than enough fizz - I will bring a couple of bottles each of the marvellous Stefano Zoli and the 1996 Giacosa Barolo

This will be the first official night so we don’t need or want to make it a blow out. So I would suggest no more than one bottle per person for the rest of you.

1. Ian - Stefano Zoli Verdicchio di Matelica 2021, Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto 1996, Canonica Barolo Paiagallo 2010 (magnum)
2. Jim
3. Tim
4.Patrick
5&6 MichaelP and Nalan
7. Alex - GD Vajra Barolo Coste Di Rose 2016
8. Nic
9&10 Tom and Gail
11.HM$
12&13 Joel and Daniela
14 Stefan
15 Peter Radford (tbc)
16. Oliver Coleman Green (tbc)

Fizz: Philipponnat x 4

What was the conclusion of the start time? I have a couple of work meetings that I need to do, so trying to juggle times.

Thanks

I think 7pm champagne reception, and 745pm sit down - something like that - does that work for you Tim?

Are we leaning Nebbiolo here or are the great wines of Tuscany fair game as well? To wit, I could bring the ‘99 Percarlo or the ‘99 Roagna Paje Barbaresco.

Or an ‘04 Elio Grasso Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté.

Great, I’ll probably bring the Percarlo then, which I’ve been waiting for the right occasion to try for a while. if it’s even 75% of the level of the 85 Percarlo TomW brought to BWE Denver, I’ll be delighted.

Bumping this thread back up

For this event it looks like we will be 16 people. Ed and Lisa are sitting this one out, but Stefan, Michael’s nephew is joining, and provisionally two of my London-based wine buddies, the two I went to Piedmont with back in October.

Could you all let me know if any of you have any specific dietary requirements?

For the food we can have individual a La carte choices or a ‘family style’ menu with two choices for each course.

We can have three, four or five courses. I have provisionally opted for four courses.

Let me know your preferences

Thanks, Ian. Four courses sounds good to me, and I’ll defer to you on whether a la carte or family style makes more sense for a large-ish wine dinner.

Looks good, Ian. I like the 4 course idea as well. But I'm also happy to go with a la carte. Whichever is easier for you and the restaurant. I'm glad to see the risotto option on there as I'm gluten free.

As an aside, this happens to be my friend Daniela's birthday on the 23rd. So I may try to bring a birth year (1990) wine for her, probably a Barolo. As well as something else. Still whitling down my options for all the nights.

Joel, you should have told us before, we could have make a special effort...

By the way, i'm born in 1974, and like in Alice in Wonderland, it is my unbirthday on March 23rd, so any 1974 Barolo welcome!

Sorry, Nic. I don't think she wants a big deal made out of it. I just mentioned it as the reason for a wine I was bringing. I wish I could bring a 1974 Barolo for you but Ian has told me they don't travel well. Maybe I can source one as I'd love to bring an old Barolo like I did to the Friday dinner this year that you missed.

Sorry, I probably should have mentioned sooner. They don't need to do antyhing too special for me at any restaurant. As long as I have some options I'm good. I'm not allergic. Thanks!

Joel - no problem at all - I think I will ask them to do a la carte, which we can do for up to 16, which is the maximum we are likely to get. So early next week in this thread I may have to ask each of you to choose a menu.

We're fine with either menu option - the choices look great.

We'll bring a couple of whites (probably an "i Clivi" and something from Emidio Pepe) and an old Barolo from a Wasserman *** producer in a **** vintage.

Do we need to select our courses in advance or at the restaurant or are we doing family style? We are OK with anything without shellfish (or associated cross contamination).
