Overall, even with good weather, the value of grape production is expected to fall from a high of AUD1.4B in 2020/21 to a low of AUD478M in 2027/28.
Note that this is grape value, not finished wine, suggesting that for many growers, it will not be viable to grow any variety. Red grapes in particular are badly affected.
As is happening in Bordeaux, the wine industry internationally is going thru a major crisis.
The data posted by Alex a few weeks ago, pointing out the issues with lesser Bordeaux properties, in clearly mirrored in Australia.
Whilst the failure of the Chinese market has affected demand, that is not the only contributing issue.
While I have not heard of the same issues in other wine producing countries, contacts in Spain and Italy are saying the same things. So the industry is clearly under pressure and structural change seems to be needed.
