Nothing in this revisit of 2014 Calon Segur moves me from my 100 point rating (plus, a rendezvous with Barry Scheck).

Rich, deeply colored, and bold, but balanced by that 2014 restraint, class, and nuance.
Checks off every box that I look for in great, representative Bordeaux.
I wonder how I would like this compared to the 2022 version, the greatest Bordeaux vintage in the history of the solar system, apparently.
17 bottles left, I'll drink one per year until I turn 80, so this is my quota for 2014.

Quite a month of May ahead, trips to NYC, Los Angeles, and a quick expedition to the province of Quebec for a wedding, then on to Rome, Italy, in June. Work hard and play hard, I say, I still have 152 felony cases, including 8 pending murder cases, but... my window to apply for Medicare opens in June, yeehaw! Please get me out from under the thumb of Anthem Blue Cross, quite possibly the most evil company in America today, and that's saying something.

Celebrating quite a week in the law, I was on a Zoom panel discussing forensic DNA issues with none other than Barry Scheck himself...

"How about THAT, Mr. Fung?"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6G7D0wov4WE

It was a thrill to interact with Barry Scheck this week!

That's him on the right and me on the left, both of us looking a little older than in 1995....

He was participating from an airport gate, I was participating from my dining area....

Sadly, i don't have any 2014. I never understood why the SAQ did not do any futures sale, and did never offer much 2014...

But i believe you that Calon Segur must be great.

Lately, a friend opened a 2014 Moulin Saint Georges and it was quite a solid classical Right Bank wine.

The 2014 Calon Segur is a profound wine. I have had it twice now and rated it 100 points each time.

Thanks for the additional data point but I am likely going to wait until next year at the 10 year marker before dipping my toes.

Calon Segur has long been a go to wine for Lucie and me. Most recently I've drunk some 2000 Calon Segur that was wonderful, and one bottle that was corked. When I regain motivation to buy wine I'll look for the 2014.

The three I drank in 2018 were a thrill, but after that I set my CT drinking window to open in 2027.

It did seem just a molecule more closed than last year, but I share the view of many that these 2014s won't likely close down much. This wine is stunning, it has everything that I look for in Bordeaux. (This doesn't mean that everyone else will rate it 100 points, I'm just saying that, for my palate, this is what I look for.)

I'm glad I was finally able to grab 3 bottles last year. I "overpaid" for them a bit but don't think I'll mind. There's a lot of 2014's that you're high on that you've already tried. Do you have a top 5 ordered at this point? Is this better than the Clerc Milon?

Hmm. Good question Joel….

I’ve loved many 2014s, and both banks performed great.

Off the top of my head:

1. Calon Segur
2. Ducru
3. Leoville Barton
4. Clerc Milon
5. d’Armailhac

GPL is excellent too.

I really want to get ahold of 2014 Montrose and give it a try.

I tasted the Calon and the Montrose one after the other at a Zachys in-store tasting in 2017 (viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7522) and they were both excellent which prompted me to double up

And not to worry, I think we will be able to try them both up against each other together in the near future and then again for years to come.

I was thoroughly wowed by the 2014 Calon Segur you opened for me and Chris B. one Wednesday night on the Dock of the Bay.

I've had it four times and rated it 94-96 each time. I have eleven bottles left with no rush to drink. As good as it is, I'm hoping my case of 2016 is as good or exceeds it.

I’ve got three bottles of the 2016, I’m going to at least double blanquito them.

The 2014 Montrose is awesome. You'll love it. If you can find any in the 130-140 (all in price) range, i'd jump on a few. Lower than that then I'd load up.

Neither the Conseillante or VCC made your top 5-6? I definitely need to find some Ducru and Barton.

I think MacArthur's has the 2014 Montrose for $149, I may buy a few if they are still there after Labor Day and post-buying freeze.

There's a few other places that have it for around 130 right now, I think without sales tax. But you'd have to ship. It's not all the money in the world but at that price I'd buy a lot more freely. Maybe try one first and see what you think. Sadly I have only one bottle and need more as well.

I got one bottle of '14 Montrose for $100 early on, and I wouldn't mind having a couple more.
Table and Vine is at $130, with 10% off available, so just $117. There are a few other good choices at T&V to help build a half case or more.
Their West Springfield store is half an hour drive from work. I could schlepp it to Maine for you Jim.

That's a really good deal, Chris. Thanks for letting me know about the 10% off.

Thanks for the offer Chris, I'm in a buying freeze until Labor Day.
I'm off on a cross country trip to Los Angeles. Do we know how much 2014 they have in stock?
I definitely need 2-12 bottles. But, alas.... The freeZe.
Feeling strong.

SRF waygu skirt and a 2014 Calon Segur
SRF waygu skirt and a 2014 Calon Segur
Decided on pulling btl #1 of a multi case purchase of the 2014 Calon Ségur last night and previous BWE WoTY winner. And I am glad I did as this is fully living up to its early promise and should be a fun one to follow as it ages and puts on additional nuance.

Double decanted it for 2 hours and this revealed deep, dark aromas of blackberry, plum, cedar and tobacco leaf which led to a fresh, ripe, dark red fruited and earthy textured palate that faded effortlessly. 94+
