2016 Durfort Vivens

Post by PghMike »

Popped one of four that I picked up in a Vivino sale and cashback deal where the vendor swapped 2016s for 2019s. After complaint i got a very nice further discount and kept these.

So far quite impressive.

Nose really hits you. Glycerin, flowers, sandalwood and fresh blueberry aromas. Medium ruby in color with transparency at the edge. Medium in body. A green note up front that integrates quickly. Licorice, leathery, floral and wild blackberry notes. Could have easily been convinced this was cab franc heavy.

Will add day 2 notes tomorrow.

13.5 percent abv.

Nicely done, Mike, sounds (and looks) nice. As I think I’ve said before, I’m not sure I’ve ever tried this wine, from any vintage. I need to change that.

Word here is that recent vintages of DV are very much on the rise.
Not among the wines I tasted from 2022.

For those of you laying down wines to age, might be a good idea to stock up.

No major changes 24 hours in. Seems to be in a nice early drinking window. 93-94.

Guys
I started buying this wine from 2005 vintage onward.
No experience with older vintages but the wine since 05 has been very good and typically Margaux with that complex, fragrant berry character.
The 05 jumped out of the glass with heaps of fruit meshed with forest floor and oak characters.
That vintage convinced me to buy more of it, and I must try some of the 09 soon.

In previous decades, I found Margaux wines with a few exceptions to be annoyingly variable and rather unpredictable but the overall quality is now very good. The 2019s I have tried over the last year showed very well, without the high alcohol and overt ripeness that I try to avoid.
