Haut Brion 1995 paired with the finest lamb I have tasted.

Post by Musigny 151 »

Perhaps the best is the simplest. The 1995 Haut Brion was the wine of the vintage for me. I tasted it en primeur, bought a case, and this is my seventh bottle. It has taken on all the brilliance of mature Haut Brion, and is probably at its apogee. Leather, brick dust, a touch of iron, autumnal leaf scents, and red and black fruit. Wonderful, layered finish.

We bought the lamb from Flannery, where I have been buying my steak and prime rib for years. This a rolled boneless loin of California lamb, sautéed and finished in the oven. No frills, just let the lamb speak. Beautiful meat, tender complex, extraordinary. The lamb was served with new potatoes, the first ramps sautéed in butter and asparagus from the garden (which we served after the main course, so as not to taint the wine).

Just wow. I considered many time buying the 1995 Haut Brion, but never did.

I'll report on my dinner last night that was quite a success to.

Sounds like a match made in heaven

I regret not owning any 1995 Haut Brion. It turned out a lot better than the 1996.

Stefan brought a 95 HB to the 2016 DC Convention, and I recall how excellent it was even 7 years ago.

I have never liked the vintage as a whole. It got good press after four pretty dismal vintages, but the only wine I thought was worth buying was the Haut Brion. I made up for it by going much more heavily into 1996 Medoc.

I’ve always liked some 95s, most notably the PLL, GPL, Cos, Sociando, Ducru. Surprisingly I’m less enamored with 95 RB though on the whole I think that bank is stronger.

A local shop has some pristine looking 95 PLL for $143 each + sales tax…. Tempting.

Great price Patrick, well below market - lowest price here about £250 all in - you should run not walk - also PLL is one of the very best 1995s

The best is Lafite imho

The 1995 was my 3rd wotn at the 21 vintage PLL vertical. After the always amazing 1989 and 1985. I would definitely grab some at that price.

Lamb and classic Bordeaux is probably my favorite pairing these days. I usually make rib chops but clearly need to learn how to make some other cuts. Sounds like a perfect Haut Brion. Glad it turned out.
