Tuscany reds

Post by Nicklasss »

With my tasting group, on Nov 9th

2004 Oreno
Slightly tiled red. Nose of cocoa, tomato paste, candied cherries, terracotta, straw, onion peel, green tobacco. Took a long time to open. Complex. Beautiful mouthfeel, cooked red fruits, earth, shoe sole, astringent and good length. Mouth less complex than the nose. To drink. TN: 90.

2006 Oreno
Darker than the 2004. Quite powerful nose of dark red berries, cherries, bay leaf and grapes. Interesting and complex palate, black fruits, ash, graphite, blue fruits, mushrooms. Tannic with a long finish. My favorite. TN: 95.

2009 Oreno
Dark red. Nose closed at first, opened with concentrated red berries, cloves, morello cherries and cinnamon. Still young. Richer palate than the 2004-2006. Blackberries, black fruits, shellfish, blueberries, a little austerity, round and long finish. Very good. Tn: 91.

2006 Poggio al Ludo
100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Dark red. Nose of dark red fruits, cinnamon stick, ripe redcurrants, blackcurrant. Mouth of black fruits, graphite, the most austere of the wine group, soil, juniper berries, long finish on violet flowers. Very good. Tn: 92.

2016 Piaggia Riserva
First wine with majority Sangiovese. The wine that transformed the most during the evening. Nose of bitter cherries, orange peel, currants, sweat, green pepper, balsamic side. Mouth of green pepper, tangy red berries, cherry soap, incense, blackberries, with good length, good freshness, sapidity, drinks very (too?) well. Tn: 93.

2019 Piaggia Riserva
Looks like 2016, but younger. Nose of bitter cherries, concentrated roses, spices, pink pepper, green tobacco. Mouth still very concentrated, flavors of tart berries, cranberry, fine tannins, but closed compared to the 5 previous wines. Tn: 89-90.

2013 Flaccianello
The darkest wine. Still young and powerful. Fragrant nose of blackcurrant, blackberries, grapes, ink, concentrated violet flowers. Powerful, classic palate, more “Bordelais” than “Sangiovese”. Blackcurrant, black fruits, noble oak, purple fruits. Serious, austere, long tannic finish with a strong floral side. Beloved. Tn: 92. Will be even better in 5 to 8 years.

Nice tasting. The Oreno, even though it mixes Cabernet and Merlot, retains an Italian touch. The 2 Piaggias are very complex Sangiovese. Poggio al Ludo and Flacianello are more Bordeaux.

Nice line up of wines and excellent notes. I am a big fan of the Piaggia Riserva and believe it is one of the best in it's class. There is enough Cab/Cab Franc in the blend to make it appealing to fans of Bordeaux....very well priced too.
