2016 Malescot

Post by PghMike »

Drank over the evening. Not much change over 4-5 hours. More restrained than the 2020 DDC but not closed off. Floral, linens, fresh raspberry on the nose. Palate of pure and clean black cherry, stone, and some eucalyptus. Some blueberry pokes through with some baking spice. Flows effortlessly. Very long finish. 94 points.

I have a love and hate relationship with Malescot due to their oak usage and when overdone; I find it overtly distracting but with no mention of oak in your note, it makes me think the 2016 might have escaped that fate.

Yeah, I have had some overdone Malescots, seems like they've turned flabby and overdone when they come out of hibernation. I can't remember trying the 2016 though.

This was exactly my experience with the 2009. Seemed to have vivid acidity to counteract the big fruit when I drank it on release, a decade later it was flabby and soft.

Definitely more polished than the 2020 DDC and not as much acidity. Nowhere near an oaky and chubby Napa cab though.
