Few affordable wines last night

Post by Nicklasss »

wines last night, quick comments.

Pol Roger NV Champagne : nice, lot of spritz and bubbles. Nice nose of lemon, pear, apple and pâtisserie. Balanced mouth, lively, medium body, fruit and light yeast. Always a very nice NV. Tn : 91.

2019 Davenay Montagny 1er cru Clos Chaudron: rich, thick. Full of pear, butter, light oak. Mouth is full of fruits, but balanced with nice mineral bitterness. I thought that is a nice Montagny, very serious. But of course, less definition or complexity than Chassagne, Puligny or Meursault. Tn: 90

2018 Domaine Galantin Bandol : affordable well made Bandol, with typic Bandol tones. Dark red color, nose of ripe Mourvèdre, blackberries, black pepper, mix of leather and meat, and dense cherries. Nice mouth, sligthly masculine, good blackfruit, dry earth, mineral, meat, rasberries, black pepper. Final is not that long, on earth tones, even is good tannic side. I like it a lot. Tn: 92.

2018 Clos des Fous pinot noir: from a southern valley of Chile. Very distinctive. Light color. Nose of cherries, morello cherries, red currants and mineral rock from the mountains. Very mineral on the nose. In mouth, light, red currants, red berries, morello cherries and smoky powder granite. First sip is destabilizing, but this is good. Tn: 88.

2021 Castellare di Castellina Chianti Classico: a producer I like, we visited them in July. Lot of violet flowers, cherries, light wood, and blackberries. Well made, mouth is medium concentration, on the same flavors as on the nose, but long and with nice freshness. Very nice Chianti. Tn: 90.

2022 Domaine Fouassier : superb Sancerre. Very ripe fruits in nose and mouth, yellow apples, citrus, lemon, with light mineral and freshness. This has also a white flowers side, and a touch of grass and honey. Complex, long, delicious. : 91.

That Pol Roger NV has really increased in price, not long ago we could get it for like $25, now it goes for like $75.

I think it’s been a while since NV Pol Roger has been $25. Not counting crazy NH discounts, that is. We served it at our wedding 36 years ago and IIRC it was in the upper $20s back then. Then again, $25 in 1988 would be $64 today.

There are many places in NY that have Pol Roger for less than $50. The basic brut was not so good for a while. We switched from PR to Charles Heidsieck as our house Champagne. PR got better, but for our taste it still is not as good as CH.
