2020 Chateau La Lagune revisited: This wine is absolutely gorgeous....

Post by JimHow »

So before deciding to buy a full case I decided to try another bottle just to confirm whether I liked this wine as much as I thought I did the first time. Wow! This wine for my taste is just brilliant. The fruit is just so pure and ripe but the class and terroir of the estate just keeps everything reined in beautifully. This truly has been my La Lagune epiphany wine, I now see what Stefan, Lucie and others have understood for decades. This is a no-brainer at $39.95 when buying by the case at Saratoga....

So I got one of those silver box frommages.com deliveries from the mother country yesterday, the ones that must stink up the FedEx delivery truck, that's why they get rid of it before 11am, brilliant! I'm sipping this wine with a cheese called Saint Nectaire Auvergne. Life is good.

I can get the 2019 for £18 for a half bottle all in from Hedonism wines in Mayfair in London. It gets very well reviewed too. This is a very good price especially considering that Hedonism is owned by a Russian oligarch, answerable to Putin, who owns the GOP now - lock, stock and barrel.

Ha, I literally got an email from Hedonism today for the first time since I bought a couple of our London wines there. They were actually very nice, I would have no qualms about buying some La Lagune from them.

Are $40-50 wines from 2019 and 2020 better than first growths from the 90s or oughts? Discuss

Jim,

I have advocated for La Lagune for many years now. This property is an incredible value for money!

For me, 2019 and 2020 are similarly excellent but maybe 2020 is slightly more concentrated. Still, you just wait for 2022 when in bottle. It may be the best one ever for La Lagune.

Indeed you have, GBF, you have always been a big advocate for La Lagune. I've always liked it but to me it seems to be reaching even greater heights.

Along with all this New Love for La Lagune, one should emphasize that older vintages purchased at auction are likely to be swill. La Lagune $$$ should only be spent on recent vintages.

If we’re ignoring inflation, give me first growths from the better years of the 80s-00s. Might I change my mind in 10-15 years when the 2019 and 2020 $40-50 wines are mature? Maybe, but I doubt it. Would be easier to answer with access to a time machine.
