  • 2004 Château Lafite Rothschild - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (10/2/2009)
openned an OWC tonight after starting with an 07 Vieux Telegraph...no comparison

Wow what a nose ..bold , tobacco, lead pencil , leather, earth
color was so dark yet looked like it had some age it was almost opaque to the edge
huge mouth feel, reasonable tannins , currant, tart black fruit, shallow mid pallet but a strong dense long finish
This was my first o4 Lafite and I am not sure how I am going to keep my hands off the case now that it is open.........but this is going to get better (95 pts.)

I figured on waiting another 3-5 years to crack one, but you tempt me...

I have tasted Lafite "en primeur" the last 4 years, and the 2004 was the vintage that captured my heart :-).

I have 2 bottles in my cellar.

All the best,
Alex R.

We had an 04 tasting just over 2 years a go in NYC and this towered head and shoulders over everything else - but I dont think we had any other firsts in the line up. It was so good it was ridiculous. Like Alex I have two bottles, wish I had two cases.

Rick let me share a ridiculously good buy he found on the '04 Lafite. We split a case. Actually I think Rick loaded up and I took 1/2 case.

So is this Lafite really not going through any closed phase at all? Great two years ago, and still great today when it should be soundly sleeping. I really like those old, sweet aged notes in my Bordeaux, but I may have to try one young.
