Zachy's Cage Sale...worth the money?

Post by wayfool »

I just received the e-mail from Zachys regarding their cage sale. As I was perusing the price list, it seems like their regular retail price is almost 80-100% higher than the best price on wine-searcher.com. Anyone else notice this, too? For instance, who's actually paying retail for these wines:

2005 Pavie - $600
2005 Cheval Blanc - $2000
2005 Las Cases - 525
2005 Troplong Mondot - $450
2005 Mouton Rothschild - $1400
2005 Margaus - $1900

Are these just pre-bubble prices? Anyone buying?

You could live up to your screen name by buying at those prices. :)

Yes, but I won't.

I think I wasn't clear with my point. Mainly, I was reaching out to other Zachys customers to see if they feel like something is off with the pricing. I find it disingenuous when retailers offer "sales" off prices that have been marked up substantially. I've purchased some wines from Zachys, but frankly, I'm surprised that a large retailer like them gets away with this.

Maybe I should have included the "sale" prices as well:

2005 Cheval Blanc - $2000 to $850
2005 Las Cases - $525 to $295
2005 Margaux - $1900 to $925
2005 Mouton Rothschild - $1400 to $795
2005 Pavie - $600 to $250
2005 Troplong Mondot - $450 to $289

What you have posted is pretty typical for Zachy's. Their prices are usually higher than most. When they have a really good sale, the prices can be reasonable, sometimes even a good deal. But you always have to cross-check against other retailers.

Zachy's has had good deals in the past, wayfool, but I haven't seen any from them in recent history.

The best deals at Zachy's are usually sale items when the vintage has just been released. Like '04 La Lagune for $26 etc.
Or for that matter, '02 Margaux for $120 (ancient history) but this just bears out my point.

Yes Chris, they had some awesome deals from the 2002 and 2004 vintages.

Andy Cuomo is busy at the moment, and I don't think there's enough postive publicity in waging war against sharp dealing retailers on behalf of well-heeled winos for him to care.
