Bernard Magrez visiting Copenhagen....

Post by greatbxfreak »

Last week a famous owner of several properties in Bordeaux, Bernard Magrez, visited Copenhagen. invited by Danish wine merchant, H.J.Hansen. He owns a total of 35 properties over the world - 20 of them are in Bordeaux. Bernard Magrez believes back label is important so customers know who is the man behind the wine. Back label on his bottles bear a little picture of him.

It was an interresting show up of the wines and confirmed the ultimate strength of Bordeaux wines, which is their diversity.

1. 2007 La Tour Carnet Blanc (1/3 S.Blanc + 1/3 S.Gris + 1/3 Semillon). 6 years old vines. Bought by B.M. in 1999.

Apple and pear flavours mixed with oak flavours on the nose with fine intensity. Fine depth, structure and length on the palate with substantial acidity. This wine isn't fully developed yet but has a really promissing future. Vintage 2007 in white's cracker in Bordeaux. 90-91p.

2. 2006 Fombrauge blanc (60% S.Blanc + 40% Semillon).

Same soil as La Tour Carnet blanc. Vivid and fresh with delightful flavours of acacia flower, peach, pear and citrus. Pretty nicely composed, well-balanced and tasty. delicious. 89p.

3. 2006 Pape Clement blanc

Incredible intensity of acacia flower, apple and lemon gras flavours on the nose. Strong and powerful on the palate with fabulous depth and finish. A bit modern in style but who really cares! Stunning performance. White Bordeaux on a very, very high note. 95p.

4. 2007 Clementin blanc du Chateau Pape Clement.

Second wine and a real delicacy. This wine shows how stunning 2007 vintage in white is. Very tasty, aromatic, finesse and beautifully balanced. Its freshness, elegance and charm is really, really catchy. 91-92p.

5. 2006 Les Grand Chenes. Situated north for Saint-Estephe, close to Gironde and with partially sandy soil.

Aromatic and fresh on the nose with nice intensity. A bit rustic, bites OK, tannic and oaky. Lacks some more depth and more structure, but will suit strong food very well. 88p.

6. 2006 La Tour Carnet rouge.

One of the best quality for price in Bordeaux and it rarely disappoints. I have a very pleasant memories of 2001, 2004 and 2005.
Very intense on the nose with ripe berries flavours (blackcurrants, raspberries and black cherries), beatifully balanced, luscous, shows fine concentration and a splendid shape overall. Extremely tasty wine which makes friends immediately. 91p.

7. 2004 Fombrauge rouge.

A bit lazy for my taste. Maybe this wine hasn't developed in full yet. Rather light in intensity and concentration, but other ingredients are OK and balance and aftertaste are nice. See you in 2-4 years time. 86+?

8. 2002 Fombrauge rouge.

Confirms with a bang that 2002 vintage isn't that bad as some critics want us to believe. Powerful with ripe (!) and tasty fruit, splendidly composed and balanced, long aftertaste. Surprised by its splendid performance and what a catch. Drink it to wild or beef meat. 92p.

9. 2004 Pape Clement.

Extremely aromatic with great intensity of ripe black fruit. Strong and robust on the palate, classy and stylish, almost aristocratic in its appearance. Incredibly elegant with firm yet smooth finish. Great stuff! 95p.
