Taking a world view of sportsmen, and particularly looking at longevity and record breakers, I vote for:
1. Don Bradman
2. Pele
3. Wayne Gretzky

Looking at US sports, I vote for:
1. Lou Gehrig
2. Joe Montana

Honourable mentions to Mohammed Ali, John McEnroe and Bo Jackson for various reasons.

I'm sure this list differs greatly depending on the meaning of "athlete".
