Moving to Singapore

Post by Claudius »

Folks,
As you may be aware I'm in Sydney.
I am moving indefinitely to Singapore this week.
Jennifer and the cats are already there and I'll be glad to get out of here - using a camp bed and have only a few bare essentials in the place.

Are there any other BWE'ers in Singapore??

Exciting, Claudius. We used to have someone from Singapore but I can't remember their name.

Claudius,

I have only been to Singapore on business, and the last time was over 10 years ago. But when I was there, I thought that many of their restaurants had decent wine lists, as long as they had a place to keep them near cellar temps. I remember sitting outdoors at a restaurant in the late 1990s and drinking a half bottle of 1989 Canon la Gaffeliere. It was quite enjoyable with a piece of red meat. Of course I have no idea where they got the red meat!

Enjoy your time there.

Guys
I may even start importing wine into Singapore.
Wine is really expensive there - the taxes are at a litre rate (more for sparking wine) which is pretty strange.
I also think that there is a lack of competition.
While I am still going to do consulting work, I am hoping to have enough time to bring in some Australian and french wines.

Jon,
the meat probably came from Aust or NZ!

Hi,

Sounds very exotic and exciting.

Please be sure to behave yourself, or otherwise they'll cane you in public or throw you in a dark hole...

Also hope you have a lot of light-weight clothing to cope with the climate.

Please keep us posted...

All the best,
Alex

Hi Alex,
Australia (Sydney) is a hot place!
Singapore is about 30C all year round - thye rain is an issue at times.
It is late summer here and it has been tropical - hot and wet!
So I'm wearing shorts and a very old shirt covered in paint (I'm trying to clean the place up).
While I'm giong to keep up with the consulting work I'm hoping to get enough time to import some wine as well.

The SNG economy (and Aust) are actually doing well - the GFC has of course had an impact but neither country has had a financial melt down.
Our banks here are making record profits and have relatively few non-performing loans.
Funny I wish I could get one of them, you know, the type you don't repay.....

My banker said their non-performing loans have a $10 Million minimum and I don't qualify. If I only had 200,000 shares of Enron to use as collateral....
