BWE 2010 Friday Rhone dinner

Post by Rick »

Stu has a Burgunfy thread going fro Friday night......I wish I could go to both:)

Please sign up for the theme that interests you the most

Here is the list of who is still signed up for a 07 Rhone(plus others) evening

Help me out and reconfirm your interest.........I will need to lock in what we want at The Capital Grille.....their largest room is not available

I have a tentative hold on a 14 and a 10 person private room....minimums will exist $1700 total if we want both or $900 and $800 respectively if we use one

As soon as we lock in attendance I would like to start a list of the gems we will open Friday

Thanks

David G
Jim H
Howard plus 3??
SF Ed plus 1 ??

Tim...........I have your wine covered
Rick Kathy
Jon Paula
Rob Sue Claire..........I know you guys may want a differnt venue

I'm still in for the Friday Rhone dinner.

Counting 20 people on your list. Assuming that holds up, a $1700 minimum for 20 people is not out of line. Are the two smaller rooms adjacent/connected?

I'm more of a Burgundy person than a Rhone person, but I'll go whichever one y'all prefer.

How about some wine suggestions?

I'll start with:
2007 Janasse Vieilles Vignes CduP
Mystery New World Grenache/CduP blend

Neither of these are old-school CduP. Will substitute one of those for the mystery wine if the group wants.

Also - Any interest in some of the great QPR '07 Cotes du Rhones?

David
I was thinking maybe we could open a number of 07 CdRs in the hotel and have for the day time sipping

I will post on the CdRs once we get dinner settled

What would you think of Janasse CDP and the Janasse Chaupin .......we could try all three Janasse's

We will need a Vieux Telegraph for sure

I would like to try a 07 CdP 100% Mouvedre if anyone has one - I could not find in Chicago

A sampling of the Janasse line is a great plan Rick.

I'll bring some Cotes du Rhones if I have room in my case. If not, if there are some on the store shelves in Chicago I'll pick up a few.

I'm not sure if I have an all-Grenache CduP or not. Some of my pre-orders haven't even come in yet... or maybe they have and I haven't yet checked on their availability.

I am a little limited in options on 07 CdP's. I could bring a Mont Olivet or a Grand Veneur. Or if still available in Chicago, I could try to track down the Vieux Telegraphe.

I also could bring something from 98, 00, or 01 for a change of pace.

Here is who i think is signed up for Rhone - TCG has a 14 person room.....the below will be a nice friendly group of wine lovers and just plan old good people ( I am sure the Burgundy group is the same :))

We will get to share wine stories on Saturday between the two groups

With 13 or 14 we will be able to have a decent 2 oz pour of the wines so we will get a good sense of some of the special wines
In BWE fashion we will no doubt have more wine that people to drink .

David G
Jim H
Rick Kathy
Jon Paula
Rob Sue Claire

Rick friends.....I will double check their attendance on Friday.........
Jim and Inna
Mike Laura

We have room for 1 more if my list is correct

This is Laura and Mike, (friends of Rick) who are very much looking forward to Saturday night at the Metropolitan Club. The view is spectacular and I hope the skies are clear. Unfortunately, we will not be able to get downtown on Friday. We look forward to meeting all of you on Saturday and to sharing some fantastic wine!

Regards,
Mike and Laura Manrot

Howard I am glad you are in

Saturday Binnys has a 15% off coupon - while not a great % off in the current market it is nice for the more limited production 07 CdPs I have on hold waiting for this coupon
So I will break my month long wine freeze but only for these .....my last 07 CdPs

What Jim said. The main thing is the people. The wine theme is just a suggestion. Older wines, N. Rhones, etc. are all welcome.

TCG just confirmed private room for 14, we are doing a 30% gratuity instead of corkage - hopefully that is OK
I think we have a room minumum of $900 and will send me a contract - so that should not be an issue

They will have 3 glasses per and decanters
630- till closing...............if we think we should start earlier let me know

Would anyone want to do Duck or something else that might go well with the Rhones? If so let me know
We may be able to special order and of course we can just order off the menu which would be easy

They will let us throw a bunch of credit cards on the table at the end and split the tab

please respond or e-mail me with comments/complaints etc

Let the fun begin - What fine wine should i bring??????

Time to start the thread on the wines

07 Beaucastle - Jim H (you bringing that lone bottle of 2007 Beaucastle CDP?)
07 Janasse CDP VV - David G's 100 pointer
07 CdP ?? - Vieux Telegraphe or Vieux DonJon unless someone else wants to bring them

What else do we have out there?

I have the '07 Quet (alleged to be 100pts by you-know-who) and will bring something else, probably older.

I think we should do the '07s blind.

Glad you are back with us again Howard.

As Rick noted, I will bring an '07 Janasse VV that he sourced for me. In addition, I will bring a non-Rhone New World Grenache/CduP blend but I will not reveal its identity. It's not an '07 but it's not "old" either.

If we decide to do some sort of taste-off or vote on the '07s, we will need to be very judicious with pours to insure everyone gets a taste. I can bring pour restrictors if you wish. I think they are 1.25 or 1.5 oz, which should make a 750 ml/25 oz bottle go around for 15 people. I am OK with doing it blind or non-blind.

This is going to be one nice 07 CdP tasting with some variety thrown in

I agree on doing the 07 blind - that will be fun...David please bring those pourers we used last year

I have a couple of older CdP whites I was thinking of bringing too

07 Beaucastle - Jim Howaniec
07 Janasse CDP VV - David G
non-Rhone New World Grenache/CduP blend
'07 Ferrand - Jim Hannan
'07 Quet - Howard
plus an older Rhone

We certainly have an A+ line-up
Howard - I have never had the Quet..

Current line-up with more to come.........we are going to need some decanter and will have to open them at least by noon on friday at the hotel

Can we use white electric tape on the decanters to keep they straight but if we do the single pour with David's restrictors we will need to label the glasses

07 Beaucastle - Jim Howanic
07 Janasse CDP VV - David G
plus non-Rhone New World Grenache/CduP blend
'07 Ferrand - Jim Hannan
'07 Mas de Boislauzon Quet - Howard
plus an older Rhone
07 CdP TBD- Rick J

With all the 07 big guns, my preference would be to bring something with a few years of age. However, I cannot do anything like SF Ed promised in the mid-1980's. But here are a few options that I could bring:
  • 2000 Vieux Telegraphe (My inventory says I have it, but I need to check to be sure I actually do)
    2003 Vieux Telegraphe
    2001 Mas de Boislauzan
2000 Font du Michelle Cuvee Etienne Gonnet
    1998 Pegau Cuvee Reserve
Rick and others, please feel free to weigh in with your thinking.
