Jay,

There is a good Radisson Hotel in New Rochelle, NY. New Rochelle is just 40 min from Grand Central Station and the Radisson in New Rochelle is just five blocks from the station. A five min taxi ride and cabs are always waiti g for the trains to pull in when you come back.

I live in New Rochelle and will be taking the train. The three of us can ride in together. Perhaps Ian will also ride on the same train from Stamford as it's on the same line he takes.

I think the Radisson in New Rochelle has very reasonable rates and people I know speak well of it.

Hi All,

Unfortunately, I need to cancel (I was afraid of this), as some work commitments came up that I need to attend. Sorry about that. If there is anyone still on the waiting list, you can take my two spots.

Thanks,

Tim

Mike Reff you are in...what are you planning to bring?

We are still going to do this event but I am going to open it to Dale and aother non/former BWE people when we get the next drop out

Calling Marisa (a wine story)...do you still want to come?

Meanwhile can we get some more clarity on what people are going to bring

I'm probably still in, 1978 Trotanoy, 1970 Yquem, 1970 La Lagune (in honor of Stefan).

Thanks, Jacques. I was in the '70 La Lagune, but will change to another wine-- the '78 La Lagune-- to give us a nice match up with the Palmers.

Er yeah I think so Mike...what vintage of GPL would that be if you dont mind me asking? What we are trying to do is aim for two bottles per person = four per couple (or maybe three) under the technical assumption we will have a 30% miss rate. Dems de roolz. (Apologies for my supercilious mood I have two bottles open - two great wines that i got nearly half price and both are singing and rocking: Matrot Puligny Combettes 06 and Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 04 (ITNOS))

Mike - and Jay too - if you are struggling to source I might be able to help. I have the following in reserve:

1975 Pichon Lalande
1975 Leoville Barton
1979 Trotanoy

just a thought but it might make sense to do the chateau's together, such as the Palmer's all in one flight and then Pichon, La Lagune and Montrose should go together as well and then pair up the vintages. Just my two cents. 10 days out, should be fun

I suggest the Palmer 70,78 paired with the La Lagune 70, 78, and the Palmer 75, 79 paired with the Giscours 70, 75. A third flight could be the Pichon Lalande and the Montrose.

Or put wines from the same year together to get a sense of each vintage.

Or throw out the corked and otherwise damaged bottles and mix all the other wines together to get a sense of the average of the Cru Classe wines from the 1970s. (I hope François is not lurking lest this give him a heart attack.)

Yes David I hope we have enough...but we have 14 people too and the miss rate may be a bit higher than normal

By the way those of you not coming are you green with envy?

Here is a suggestion for the line up:

Flight one - starters

MBP 70, GPL 70, Canon 71, LAP 71

Flight two – right bankers

Figeac 75, Trotanoy 78, Pavie 79

Flight three – Margaux berries

La Lagune 70, La Lagune 78, Giscours 70, Giscours 75

Flight four – the Pichons

Pichon Lalandes 70, 78, 79

Flight five – the Palmers

Palmers 70, 75, 78???, 79

Flight six – the firsts

Mouton 75, Latour 75, Latour 79, Haut Brion 78

Flight seven – rounding off the reds

Montrose 70, Montrose 78, DDC 78, LTHB 79

Flight eight – the sweeties

d’Yquem 70, Filhot 70, Gilette CDT 78

I am very sorry, but after an intensive search I find that I do NOT have a bottle of '78 Palmer. I see we have no Ducru and could bring either the 75, 76, or 79. Other possibilities are 75 or 78 Brane Cantenac, 75 Leoville Barton, 79 Figeac, 78 La Dominique, 79 Clos L'Eglise, 78 Cos, 78 Clerc Milon. What sounds best?

I vote for Ducru. I have liked both 71 and 79 either of them would be fine with me.

Pretty sure I have a bottle of 78 Palmer that I could bring to keep that flight together.

stefan - no worries - stuff happens - it would be nice to have the 78 Palmer because I wanted to make that flight the highlight of the tasting - which estate outperformed Palmer in the 70s apart from Latour and La Mission HB? And Chris it is v generous of you to offer because you are already bringing three stonking wines - here is my suggestion - I have confirmed with Fabios that we have the table for 14 on the 16th - so Mike why don't you bring your friend Tom - and perhaps he could arrange some kind of contribution/accommodation with Chris for the 78 Palmer - just thinking out aloud. As for a substitute wine stefan we already have a lot - I was factoring a 20-30% miss rate which may be pessimistic - Ducru 76 would get my vote...just since Ducru is Ducru and it is conspicuous by its absence on the list - we dont have any 76s either. (Also Ducru 76 was one of the first clarets I ever appreciated in the late 80s.)

I think we are getting to the point where we have too many wines for this event. So depending on whether Chris can bring 78 Palmer - no train smash if he cant - I would suggest stefan that you could bring the 76 Ducru but as a reserve in case we get a high miss rate. I am still not sure if I am going to bring a guest. If I dont I will still bring four wines but perhaps make the 79 LTHB as sub as well. Otherwise we could have 30 between 13 which is a bit ambitious.
