BWE'11 - Friday night plan

Post by SF Ed »

Now that we are getting closer to BWE'11, it's time to start properly planning some of the events. As I mentioned months ago, I'd like to invite everyone over to my flat on Friday evening. Lots of people are putting together dinner plans as well for Friday night, so time to lay out what I am thinking.

I would like to propose that people come over to my flat at 6 PM on Friday May 20th. I live at in SF proper, about 2-3 miles from downtown. The plan will be to have some cheese and charcuterie available, but not attempt to serve dinner, knowing that people will be going out to dinner.

Let's consider it a first stop before other events that evening, wrapping things up by 9. That way, people can set up 9 PM dining arrangements but we still have the opportunity to get together as a group on Friday night.

I would propose that the theme be Right Bank, but of course people will (and should) bring whatever they want to share. Very open to other theme ideas, just don't want to be very prescriptive/limiting (like top vintages of Lynch Bages, for example).

It would be very handy if people (especially locals) brought stemware, as I don't have enough stems for 30.

Parking will simply be impossible. I live one block from the J (a street car that runs from downtown), or it is a $10 cab from downtown. Don't drive.

I have done this in previous years when BWE has gotten together in the SF area, with an especially epic session before Napa '02 where I opened a shot-looking bottle of 1945 Leflaive Batard Montrachet that is the single best dry white wine I have ever tasted. What will we be sampling this time 8-) :?:

I am very much looking forward to seeing BWE friends both old and new!

I am in for 6 PM (if my flight is not delay).
At my locker which is only magnums, I only have left banks except for an 01 Canon Gaffeliere magnum which I will bring if I can get it out from all the others magnums there. It can be changed or expanded if others have different themes.
Looking foward to meet a lot of BWE's there.

Ed:

Count me + guest in for your event.
A few bottles, or a large format, of Right bank will be easy to find in my cellar.

Looking forward to it, thanks!

we plan to be there but will probably have to leave early for a family dinner (this may change). How about some champagne?

Champagne is always good. I would just consider Right Bank a nice thought, not a rule.

Any plans for dinner afterwards in the vicinity? I am solo, and can do anything as long as there are taxis back to downtown late Friday.

Yes I'm sure there will be a couple dinners, odejesus.
Stuart is organizing a Spanish wine dinner, I think there is also an Italian wine dinner in the works?

Because I am going to Ed's, I might go for Pizza at Delfina at 18th and Guerrero (next to Dolores). They are open until 11.

Ed - just to confirm was what implied in other threads: we would like to come along some time after six before heading off to the burgundy dinner later. Not sure yet what we will bring but something 'au fait' with the atmospherics - Ian

I also just booked a table for 6 at Delfina (very good Italian, 3 blocks from my flat, likely no corkage) for 9:30 for Friday evening. Anyone want to join me and Lisa? Burgundy or Rhone perhaps?

Hey Ed,

Gail and I will be at your place for the early evening, then off for the Comte's Burgundy dinner. I'm starting to think that adherence to the "Right Bank" theme might be appropriate, but we still may bring a Cali classic (ala CabFan!) as well.

Ciao,
Tom

Ed - if you expand the reservation by one, that'd accommodate Tom and Gail, Comte and guest, you and Lisa, and myself for the Burgundy dinner......

Can't - Delfina will not go over 6 people. We could always join you guys - just thought that since I can get us in at Delfina, that would be a good idea.

The table at Absinthe I booked for Ian is for 8 people. So if Ed and Lisa want to join, it would be a perfect 8, as I think there are 6 attendees so far. But please check with Ian first.

Stuart is organizing a Spanish wine dinner . . .
Just a reminder - plenty of room for more at the Spanish wine dinner Friday at One Market. But since we're starting at 7 PM, it won't work to combine with Ed's bash.

Just to avoid confusion (or perhaps sow it) I am copying this post from another thread

For the burgundy dinner I think we have seven

Tom and Gail - Drouhin Echezeaux 1983, Jadot Gevrey Chambertin Clos St-Jacques 1990 + dessert wine
Ed and Lisa - Coche Dury Bourgogne Blanc 2001, Lamarche La Grand Rue 1990
JonB
Ian and Suraya - Marc Morey Batard Montrachet 1990, Lamarche Clos De Vougeot 2002

Ed I think the Coche will give the Batard a hard time, though it is no slouch itself, recently outpointing a Leflaive Chevvy 97

How about Drouhin '83 Echezeaux (we just had an '83 Pommard Epenots from the same assortment that was quite tasty - the Drouhin wines don't seem to show the rot seen in many others from the vintage) and Jadot '90 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques? We'll also bring a non-Bordeaux dessert wine.

The original Burgundy dinner plan, Absinthe, fell through due to corkage policies. I am a regular at Delfina and booked us in there for 9:30 on Friday night. No corkage issues for a group with me ;)

We're bringing an 89 Pomerol that was PDG a few weeks ago.

The smart money/early line is on the 1988 vintage for SF Ed's decanters... :-)

Ed, it looks like I'll be at your place as well. Thanks for setting that up. I'll come with my daughter Julia, who you've met (the wifey is out of town).

I'll bring a bottle of 1985 L'Eglise Clinet and some bubbly, probably a 1996 Gosset Celebris. Geez, I haven't seen a lot of these BWE'ers in a helluva long time!
