What was your first full case purchase?

Post by Houndsong »

I'm sitting in for Patrick this week. :D

Inspired by DavidG's unprompted comment: http://www.bordeauxwineenthusiasts.com/ ... 738#p19350 that the 1983 Prieure Lichine was the first case he ever purchased.

I'm just guessing now but mine might have been the 1982 Ch. Rahoul, Graves. Drunk entirely in the year probably 1985 or 1986. Shameful. I'm not sure but it was a red Graves, the name was something like that and it was about $4 or $5 a bottle, which pretty much was the extent of my monthly disposable income after beer and pizza. I also recall another Graves, Ch. Millet, but for some reason I recall that being blanc. It may seem impressive (a vintage nearly 30 years on, not the Chateau) but it was a long, long time before I ever bought another case. Or much Bordeaux at all. Or even drank much wine. After that it was not much until the 2000 futures.

If it was the Rahoul, I guess I should have held some back: http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?i ... &AllV=True

The earliest I'm recalling are 1998 Carruades or 1998 Pape Clement.

Thanks, Hound (am I slacking with general questions?)...

Mine was the 1989 Meyney purchased in 1995 for $18/per, which appropriately enough, we shared a bottle of in Salida in 2008!

... followed shortly by cases of the 1989 LaTour St. Bonnet and 1989 Belgrave, each for $8-9 a bottle. That Belgrave was really delicious back in 1995/6.

1989 Chateau de la Gardine Chateauneuf du Pape. I think it was 1993. And I have no idea why I remember that.

After a much earlier purchase of Rodney Strong cab, 2001 Chateau des Anneraux (Lalande de Pomerol) in response to a Wall Street Journal article that reviewed it as Delicious!

Mine was probably a Piesporter Goldtropchen, maybe a 1987, for around $12 (per case) less 5%.

I think mine was a case of Chateau Lafite 1981 for 480 pounds from Farr Vintners in the early 1990s...around the same time I bought a case of La Mission Haut Brion 1989 for 700 pounds and the Haut Brion at 900 pounds was deemed too exorbitant to afford.

Well you already know mine - '83 Prieure Lichine. The back story is my father had started getting interested in wine, which rekindled my interest from a few years back. I was home for Thanksgiving and we "took a drive to Scarsdale" so he could show me Zachy's. The '83 PL was on sale and we split 3 cases to open and follow as they aged. We each opened a few bottles "together" and shared our impressions before he passed away about 6-7 years later. I then inherited the rest of his stash. That gave me an opportunity to compare his passively stored bottles (58-68 degrees) to my actively stored bottles (57 degrees) over the next decade or so. Every one brought a nice memory and emotion. So every bottle was a great one for me.

1989 Meyney and Cantemerle ordered as futures from Pops. Only 1 Meyney remains.

It's probably the '66 Ducru a few years ago. I bought one first in southern california at Chris' brother's house and it was a sublime wine. Then back home I was haunted by it and when I saw it available in a local store, I made the plunge and bought more than 12 bottles (it's more like 3-4 bottles first and then 8 more later). I don't buy wine in case most of the time. My buying habit is to buy mature and ready-to-drink wine and drink them up.

Do you still have some '66 Ducru, Werner? We drank a lot of both the '64 and the '66 30+ years ago, but I have not drunk either in a long time.

First full case purchase was some Penfold's blend, forgot the name now. $72. One of the better wines I'd had at that time. It got worse over the years especially after the Take Over. Haven't even tried it in oh, 10+ years.

I think my first was something like 2006 Huates Cotes de Nuits Blanc, Cuvee Marine by Anne Gros. We did however have a lot of odd bottles of things that we had been picking up but that was my first case for about £140 pre tax.

first one I REMEMBER was also my first futures-89 La Lagune-might be one left. I drank one last summer and it was sublime. though I dimly recall a case of Raymond reserve chard after we visited the winery on our honeymoon in 1989.

If we really want to get technical about it, I'm embarassed to say it was a case of 1987 Beringer White Zin at BJ's for $2.50 a bottle. It was for my wife before I really became that interested in wine.

Yeah, but White Zin did have an epic two-year run. I think I bought a case too, for exactly that reason.

Yeah, I know. It's about as bad as it gets. For years I wouldn't talk about and repressed the memory. It took countless sessions with a therapist before I could bring myself to admit it

How about a case of 1978 Louis Martini "Special Selection" Zinfandel in about 1988 for maybe 5.00$ per.

I'm thinking it was 1980 Conn Creek Napa Cabernet, a pretty good drink at ~$10/bottle. All downhill from there...

Well, we moved around a lot and never lived in one place long enough before 1994. My first case purchase was in 1994 and I believe it was a 1990 Lynch Bages (which I still have intact right here)

Jal wins... Gerry should get some sort of award, though.
