Not drinking? Don't tell me you're not buying too!

Post by Houndsong »

Filling in for Patrick again this week. :D

Been rather quiet here since everyone seems to have adopted healthier lifestyles, with a couple of notable exceptions.

I'll go 1st. Have recently received/imminently hope to receive:

2005 La Fleur de Bouard
2005 Paloumey
2005 de Malle ($19/750 seemed too good to pass even though I open like one a year)

2005 Croix de Gay
2003 Chasse Spleen
2006 Sniff Oh Lafeet
2006 DdC (rouge)

I have been drinking, buying and consigning wine like a madman the past couple of months. All while losing 17 pounds I didn't even know I had! It's a lot of fun Jim. You should try it.

Hound - are you talking 17 British pounds, do you have the flu, or are you skiing every day?

I've made a few purchases, I confess;
2007 Anderson Conn Valley Eloge (Calif.)
2007 Soos Creek (this is a small Washington producer; an ex-Boeing engineer that produces some outstanding Washington Bordeaux blends that age well, from excellent Washington vineyards, for $20-$30/bottle)
1989 Leoville Las Cases
1990 L'Evangile

And I hope to make a few 2009 basic Bourgogne purchases. I'm just trying to get enough resveratrol to stay healthy.

Just a tad more exercise maybe, but mostly I stopped the frustration eating at lunch. Plus I highly recommend almond milk.

I've been a very bad boy, but they say confession is good for the soul.

Well, these were purchased from Premier Cru over 4 years ago, but I've been told (for the last 18 months) that they are coming "any day:"
2005 Angelus
2005 Hosanna
2005 La Fleur de Gay
2005 L'Eglise Clinet

And these, though recently purchased from Macarthur, may actually arrive before the '05s from PC.
2009 Angelus
2009 Cantemerle
2009 Haut Bergey
2009 Lalande Borie
2009 Talbot

That's it for Bordeaux. Not a lot, as I’m pretty well stocked in that department, but as I said, I've been very very naughty. Other recent arrivals or recent purchases in the pipeline:
2007 Beaucastel Rouge CduP
2007 Clos du Mont Olivet Cuvee du Papet CduP
2007 Janasse Vieilles Vignes CduP
2007 Mordoree Rein du Bois CduP
2007 Pierre Usseglio Mon Aieul CduP
NV Krug Brut Rose Champagne
2002 Pierre Peters Cuvee Speciale Les Chetillons Blanc de Blancs Champagne
1993 Pajzos Esszencia
2007 Jessup Cellars Cabernet Juel
2007 Jessup Cellars Table for Four
2008 Screaming Eagle Cabernet
2006 Shafer Cabernet Hillside Select
2007 Shafer Cabernet One Point Five
2007 Shafer Syrah Relentless
2007 Jessup Cellars Cabernet Juel
2007 Jessup Cellars Table For Four
2009 Jessup Cellars Chardonnay
2009 Jessup Cellars Sauvignon Blanc
2009 Peter Michael Chardonnay Belle Cote
2009 Peter Michael Chardonnay La Carriere
2009 Peter Michael Chardonnay Cuvee Indigene
2006 Sine Qua Non Chardonnay Mr. K Noble Man
2006 Sine Qua Non Marsanne Mr. K Straw Man
2007 Sine Qua Non Syrah Dangerous Birds
2007 Sine Qua Non Grenache Dangerous Birds
2008 Sine Qua Non Grenache The Line
2008 Sine Qua Non Syrah B-20
2008 Sine Qua Non Roussanne Jinete Bajo Vin de Paille
2009 Sine Qua Non Roussanne/Viognier/Chardonnay On The Lam

The really twisted thing about this is that, except for the '05 Bordeaux, it was all financed by the Chinese infatuation with Lafite.

That's an impressive list. And a wise way of funding it.

Lucie and I will be in Berkeley for four months this fall. I have been buying older wines to be delivered there because I don't have a legal and convenient way to transport a lot of wine from home to there.

I'm, literally, running out of room and so have tried to slow down. I'm back in the land on pinot noir again and have been buying half cases of 08 Oregon especially various St Innocent bottlings. Various 07 CA cabs though nowhere close to what the good Dr. above has been purchasing. A few more 07CNDPs as well as I've been pleased with the bottles I've opened. One of my summer whites is the 09 Francois & Jean-Marie Cherrier Sancerre, "Les Chailloux" Vieilles Vignes. Some NV champagne and Sauternes (including a few 02 Guiraud splits-I imagine from the same retailer as Jacques). Trying more Italians and Spanish reds. Hmmm...no wonder I'm overloaded.

I started buying again over the last six months, to reload my cellar after a long period (over 5 years) of not buying anything -- I'm sort of all or nothing so I decided I couldn't buy at all if I wanted to control spending. I spent way more than I intended but I'm sort of glad I did as prices have gone up significantly just since I started buying (particularly the Bordeaux; Burgundy prices seem to be more stable but a number of the 2005 Burgundies I wanted to lay down seem to have disappeared from the market). I'm really sorry I didn't think to buy during the 2008-2009 crisis when I could have done even better.

Probably time to stop buying the big guns again now. Only issue now is my cellar is still heavily weighted toward the last decade (2000 and after). Hope I won't have to wait another five years to drink any of them!

Here's most (not quite all) of my haul:

Glad to hear that, Mike. Have yet to crack one. Last Esszencia I had was a '96 Stanza, which was memorable stuff.

Have mainly purchased odd bits in France and six packs of recently released Nebbiolo from 06 and 07... In fact I'm seriouslytemtpted by some £35 a bottle Brovia Barolo Crus, but I am attempted to save, so that I can pick up roughly 10 cases of 2010 BX. If I don't, the wife will kill me! It is our anniversary vintage and it is her favourite region for wine in the world!!
