SF '11: What are you bringing?

By benevolent dictatorial decree I am declaring that the theme for BWE '11 will "Wines that JimHow Likes."

Therefore, I will bring something from "the next Lafite," that "poor Man's Mouton," Chateau Lynch Bages....

Are we going to have a champagne reception beforehand?

I can bring 2002 Dom Perignon....

How about a blind tasting?

How about something from 1989/1990 and 1995/1996, to determine who is right:

James Suckling or He Who Shall Remain Nameless

I like the idea of blind tasting 1989 vs.1990. It's too young for 1995 vs. 1996 for now, I think. I have some single bottles of 1989s which I could contribute.

I have a 1990 Lagrange but not the '90 Purple Baron.

On doing a physical inventory, I see that I do NOT have a 1990 Lagrange.

I don't have very old wines at my locker in SF, and all is in magnums.
I was thinking on magnums of the 2000 second wines of Lafite, Margaux, Latour. I don't know if they are "Wines that JimHow Likes."

Jim, do people bring two similar 750's, or a magnum so most people can drink a vintage?
What is the usual contribution per person for Saturday night, so we don't have to much wine left at the restaurant?

Good questions, odejesus, we probably average a couple bottles per person. We usually do a pre-dinner blind tasting, and the rest of the wines are consumed during dinner. We have champagne before dinner and Sauternes afterwards.

It would be good to have two bottles each of 3 wines from 1989 and 1990 (six wines total) for the blind tasting, but that may be tricky.

We would need some wines for the following categories:

1. Champagne
JimHow: 2002 Dom Perignon

We need at least 5 more bottles of Champagne for the reception from 6-7pm to go with the hors d'oeuvres.

2. Blind tasting:
We need 2 bottles of a same wine, and a total of 12 bottles. If we end up with the same wine for both vintages 89 and 90, that would be ideal.

Here is a list of wine folks could bring:

MichaelP: 89 Baron, 90 Lalande
Aimeedogdogdog: 89 Margaux, 90 Latour
Claret: 90 Pichon Baron, 90 Lagrange
JonB: 89 Poyferre, 89 Las Cases, 89 Haut Bailly, 90 Barton
Stefan: 89 Lagrange
William P: 89 Lynch Bages

As you see, there are no 2 bottles of the same wine of a vintage. Please chime in, the rest of the attendees.

3. Dessert wine:

Comte Faneur: 2003 d'Yquem

We also need more dessert wines.

The chef at Hotel Monaco is preparing the meu for us. I should have it this week, so please come back and check out the forum later, and pick your choice of the courses. The way it works:

When you get to the door of the venue, pick up your nametag and place it on the table you would sit. With the nametag, the waiter/waitress would bring out the choice of dish you picked earlier and serve you correctly.

I can certainly bring two full bottles worth of 03 Yquem, I do have soome odd 89s like La Lagune, Sociando and Cos knocking around here but everything else is in storage.

So we do a blind tasting initially and then a free-for-all-mainly bordeaux for dinner? Where people can bring what they like?

That is correct, Ian, we try to do some sort of blind tasting before dinner, then everything else is pretty much a free-for-all after that.

Two bottles of 2003 d'Yquem.... Mmmmmmmmmmm!

d"Yquem is a BWE convention dinner tradition.

I went to pull bottles and have some good new, some bad news, and some tragic news. First the bad news: I do NOT have the '89 Lagrange. The good news is that I DO have '90 Pichon Lalande and '89 Leoville las Cases to match with MichaelP and JonB, respectively. The tragic news is that in doing the hunting I crashed a bottle of '96 Leoville Barton. (Weeping and gnashing of teeth.)

Did someone else say they had an '89 Lynch? Was it Jacques?

If we have one more bottle of '89 Lynch, we will have our three bottles from the 1989 vintage.

I don't remember my dreams, other than BWE dinners and a recurring nightmare that I never graduated from law school because I skipped so many classes.

If we can't get a 1989 vs. 1990 tasting going, are there any other thoughts on what we should drink during the social hour before dinner?

It would be nice to have another '89 Lynch there, I don't have any left in my cellar, the 3L from Chicago '10 was my last one.

If we can't drum up enough 1990s perhaps we could do a Bordeaux vs. California blind tasting?
