2005 or 2010

Post by Bacchus »

After reading articles in the most recent issues of Decanter and World of Fine Wine, I'm wondering if others have sensed any sort of re-assessment of the quality of the 2010 vintage, especially in contrast to 2005. Both mags have articles which assert that 2010 isn't up to 2005, and recommend backfilling with the less expensive '05s rather than buying the '10s. With that, I'm off to pick up the few remaining 2005 GPLs in my local store. :-)

I've been adding a case of 05 here and there. They are that much closer to what they're supposed to be.

I am buying 08 Burgs as they come up for closeout. But given your criteria go 05.

05 on price.

I think the article may be more a backlash on the ridiculous prices rather than any intrisic quality of the wines, which I still believe are great and prefer them to the 09s. However, I refuse to pay those prices and say 05 or even top 07/08 Burgs.

07s are starting to show real classic promise with a few years in bottle now.

While I haven't noticed any re-reviewing, it sounded like the two vintages were fairly close in style, with some reviewers saying 2010 had more of everything...tannins alcohol, acidity, etc. RP noted in a thread that 2010 wasn't as great as 2009, 2005 and 2000, but in the WA he said it would be prudent to say 2010 is not better than those vintages. It seems to me that rather than making a vintage decision, I'd make a wine decision looking at your preferences, availability, price, etc. I don't know about Newfoundland, but elsewhere in N.America it is likey the 2010s will be on the shelves at no greater than current futures pricing, so you can try before you buy.

Even if the 10s come out; I think the prices will fall before any try before you buy will take place...

Not hugely... 08 firsts are lower after bottling than before, but are still not cheap. They are still better value than 09 and 10.

A lot of merchants will be reluctant to take a hit on those prices, but in the end like with 97s will eventually have to.
