Avatars

Post by PhilR »

I've enabled the avatar functionality and uploaded one to my account. I've also set the maximum size to 120x120 pixels.

What do people think about this?

That's my little vineyard by the way in my avatar.

I mean, pictures of vineyards and chateaux are one thing, are we gonna have to look at Chicago Cubs logos and pictures of beautiful women every time we log onto BWE?

I think we should consider holding off on avatars and quotes and stuff like that, at least for the moment. We can always add that feature later.

OK I've disabled it. I do think it allows people to have more of an individuality about their posts though. When I go on forums and notice peoples' avatars I immediately associate that post with their previous ones I've noticed. My 2p anyway, happy to leave it off for now. BWE survived this long without them anyway.

I just went to the Parker site to check the avatars and, hillariously, the first one I saw was a Cubs logo. I'm not a big fan of the avatars I don't really see how they enhance the site, plus I guess I'm biased because I think the dynamic on that Parker site is so gross. If we ever become like that place I'm pushing the delete button. What do the other managers think about avatars?

I don't think we need avatars. They seem to be the "thing to do" at most BBs. I kind of like it when I recognize the poster immediately from the avatar and make an association - it adds a bit more personality. But then multiple people end up choosing the same avatar, or some keep changing theirs, so it defeats the purpose. I guess it's entertaining to some. I'm fine with people's posts speaking for them without an avatar.

OK :(

We could always trial run them later and turn them off again if it's decided we don't want them

Excellent idea. Maybe after two or three weeks we can say okay, we'll try out avatars for a week or so, to see how it looks.

What? You don't want Landreth and Livingston joining & using salacious avatars for their enjoyment? Elitists (and thank God for that!!!).

I love my Canadian Rockies avatars, but can live without them no problem.

Avatars could be fun but also could be annoying. Does someone really want to see my eating chicken feet? Or a gun pointing at you everytime you read a post?

like Jim, I am all for simplicity.

I'll keep an open mind about it, but I think we have such a classy look here right now on the site, I hate to see it compromised.

I agree. BWE is like the Wall Street Journal to erobotparker's USA Yesterday. Hey, maybe we should allow avatars, but they have to be in that black-and-white, pontillist style the WSJ uses? Oh yeah, no animated smilies, also. Oops.

Seriously, anybody seen the new topic button lately? It's gone missing from my forum view, and I have something really important to post. 8-)

Avatars can be good in that you can recognize a poster. Avatars are bad in that they are yet more useless bytes (or bits, depends on how you think) than is necessary. I've seen avatars that made me think "What where you thinking" to "GAWD! If I have to look at another babys' face I'll puke".

I'm in the fold of hating folk who send us "Christmas Cards" of they're family or children. Yeah, Thanks for nothing. You could send a photo INSIDE the card you ego-cheapo. Send me a Winter card to display.

I'd vote against avatars if it counts. Otherwise, I'll go with the flow.

I'm totally with you on that one Alch, I don't like avatars. But... I'm willing to listen to the arguments.

I don't need no stinking avatar..... (Is there an emoticon that does a cheesy Latin accent?)

I'm OK without them. Back on the Belmaati Site Joe got me a cool avatar of a guy shelling out money ... it fit my life ! I sort of like the way the Wine Disorder site functions. Very basic.
