1986 Meyney

Post by Blanquito »

1986 Meyney
Ok, this is really good, in a great place right now. The rough, gritty tannins of 3-4 years ago have resolved, leaving a suave, pretty wine. The nose is classic mature Bordeaux, with scents of dried cherries, black tea, some cigar, some tar perhaps. After 30 minutes of air, the palate is just lovely, almost light despite its 1986-iron tannins which are now merely a background reminder of this 25 year-old's ancestry. There's now an engaging sweetness in the midpalate to go with it's nicely fleshy texture. There's flavors of juicy cranberry, dusty earth and sun-baked wood, and some hints of Barolo-like unsweetened cacao powder. Not quite as good as the 1989 Meyney which is a bit richer, a bit more effusive, and this doesn't have the depth, layering or complexity of the Greats of '86, but who cares? Begins to fade after a few hours, so drink now and marvel at how they used to make 'em at Cordier. 92-93 pts.

Don't have nor ever owned any '86 Meyney. But tasted in off lines over the years. Always a SOLID performer.

Glad to hear this. Recently got a couple of bottles from HDH, looking forward to opening one soon (maybe this weekend).

Love those old Cordiers... an 83 Talbot a few nights ago was tremendous.

This bottle was 2-3 points higher than my previous bottles, Ramon, hence my impression that it has really opened up. I drank it by itself, which I think is a good idea. Tasting it next to, say, the '86 Talbot might make it seem a bit light.

When you consider what Meyney costs...

I too have had some very fine bottles through the years.

I drank another one last week. This wine is at peak and I plan to drink the last bottle soon.
