Thanksgiving 2011, Day 4

Post by stefan »

On Thanksgiving morning, with migas and fruit we drank

2005 Domaine Chandon Blanc de Blanc. This sparkler is fresh and bright with apple and pear flavors that hold. This is my favorite of the Chandon line up.
"Boring," says stefanJr. "Boring," agrees Judd, "just sweet apples." s 90. sJr 88. J 86. L 89.

By itself we drank

NV Moet et Chandon Brut Imperial. This one is also light, but rather grapey and tasty on the sides. It is a solid commercial Champagne. Everyone but I preferred it to the '05 Chandon Bl de Bl. s 88. sJr 89. J 89. L 91.

2009 Evesham Wood Pinot Noir. Sweet & clean. Good for early drinking. "Candied raspberries," says Judd. s 87-88. sJr 89-90.

With turkey and all the trimmings we drank

2004 Saint Innocent Seven Springs Special Selection. "Sour and sweet and yummy and tasty," coos Shea. The 7 Springs has the texture and depth of a Grand Cru Burgundy from a good year. Will it develop the complexity? Only time will tell. s 92+. L 92. J 90. sJr 93 (94?).

1976 La Lagune. This bottle is not as fresh as the one we drank with Bill and Linda last week, but it is quite nice. Tobacco is pronounced and the raisins are dry. s 89. sJr 90. L 90. J 92.

With various pumpkin pies and watching football we drank

1980 de Fargues. This Sauternes is not very sweet but was a good complement for the pies. Judd, stefanJr, and I finished a bottle of it, so apparently we liked the wine, but our memories of it are hazy.

Not surprisingly since it's you, I see a few La Lagune during your Thanksgiving meals.

We had a 1966 La Lagune with ours, including a 82 du Tertre, 85 Gloria, 2004 Harlan Maiden, a 2001 Cos d'Estournel and a 92 Campillo Gran Reserva. Most agreed that the 1966 La Lagune, even with the crumbly cork, stole quite a bit of thunder from the other wines.

That is no surprise to me, Ramon, despite the wonderful line up you had.
