DC '09: It takes a (Burgundy) village

Post by JimHow »

Whether at one of the official dinners, or with cheese and crackers in the hotel room at a late Friday afternoon tasting, I'm going to bring the following 2005 Burgundies from the famous 2008 New Hampshire Lquor Store acquisitions for tasting by BWE DC '09 participants in the name of science (plus maybe another surprise or two):

2005 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru
2005 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules
2005 Louis Jadot Beaune Chouacheaux
2005 Joseph Drouhin Chorey-les-Beaune
2005 Joseph Drouin Chambolle Musigny
2005 J.M. Boillot Volnay
2005 Mongeard-Mugneret Fixin
2005 Domaine Jean Grivot Vosnee Romanee
2005 Nicholas Potel Volnay Vielles Vignes
2005 Faiveley 1er Cru Clos du Roy
2005 Pierre Gelin Gevrey Chambertin Clos des Meixvelles
2005 Domaine Ramonet Chassange-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot

We need to get to the truth!

What truth are you hoping to uncover? The 2005s are getting more and more closed every day.

I'm sure they are, rieslingfan, but we'll suffer through it.

Sounds like the deck may be stacked against these wines at this point in time. Which is just what I need. A bunch of '05 Burgs that aren't showing well, so I can remain smugly confident in my preference for Bordeaux and Rhone, thus avoiding another expensive cellar expansion. Not to mention an opportunity to give Jim another friendly needling about choosing them as BWE WOTY.

The guy at Macarthur's said a lot of the '05 Burgs were closing down, but he also suggested that the Potel VV Volnay and the Clos Salamon he sold me should be drinking well now. I know some of you here have had the Potel. Is it open for business? CellarTracker says drink 2010-2016, but I have no idea what those folks know. How about the Clos Salomon, any experience?

Now, I know where I will pass sometime, in between dinners...

Jim, this is a lot of 2005 Burgundy. You're like in a mission. You should add a few 2005 Bordeaux, same price level, to compare correctly...

It is going to be a difficult task but someone has to do it.
