I'm thinking 4:30-5ish, Stefan, but I'm flexible.
I'll make sure we have something good to drink.

The theme will be Bordeaux... and maybe some champagne?

Sure, any Bordeaux, young and old. I'm going to have the 2008 Leoville Poyferre there. I doubt any significant 2009s will be on the shelves, it would be good to sample some 2009s over the weekend.

Incidentally....Now that you are a Burgundy lover, Jim. Chevillon does a great job in so-called off vintages. Lucie and I drank a lovely 03 NSG Les Bousselots tonight (I had left over quail; she ate a mushroom omelette) that has a developed bouquet and tannins for aging. Robert Chevillon is the winemaker who convinced me that NSG is not just a country cousin of the finer northern Burgundies.

Yes I have one bottle of his wine, a 2005 Chevillion Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots.
My purchasing plan over the next two years is to load up on 2009 Bordeaux and 2010 Burgundy.

Been looking for black frames, man is it tough to find a simple pair of black frames these days without all kinds of designs, art work, brand logos, etc., all over them. What happened to those good old NASA scientist days of simple retro black frames! Like the ones I used to wear in Catholic grade school. The world is going to pot, these days, I tell you.

I'll bethere Jim, ready to sample a few bottle before attending the dinner Mr. Bublitz organized for later that night.

Maybe I have a suggestion : maybe bring some Gruaud larose (fro m1998 to 2008, excluding 2000 and 2005) to see if Mr. P is right about it?

I'd like to try out two or three 2009s. Has the vintage hit the shelves at all in NYC or DC?

I was in Macarthur's a couple of months ago and some of the inexpensive petits chateaux <$20 bottles were available. Been meaning to call them to see if any of the grand cru classe have come in. Their website says: "Some 2009 Bordeaux are now in stock - but most will arrive in April 2012. Quantities are very limited." Calvert Woodly also has a bunch of petits in:

Enjoy yourselves everybody. And I bloody well hope the Canadian contingent makes a worthy showing of themselves! When I get home from the office later I'll have to crack something open to participate sympathetically in this joyous event. Hey, maybe the 08 LeoP. Enjoy!

I'd like to be able to join in, Jim. Everyone sounds so friendly and vino-knowledgable; a convention should be great fun as well as something of a learning experience. Mind you, being an academic, this is always an impossible time of year for me.

I'm impressed, Stefan. Tough time of year to get away from the office. How do you deal with your classes, and the marking that is always piled so high this time of year? You must be able to draw upon grad students?

Bacchus, Stefan understandings that the true test of a BWEer is that you have to undergo an official BWE "hazing" at a BWE convention with the BD, eating a whoopie pie while also drinking a fine northern Medoc.... It' is a rite of passage!

I arrange my spring teaching M-W in the spring term, Bacchus, and arrange assignments so that I don't have to grade the weekend of BWE (which means that I am grading this weekend). I have never missed teaching a class for a personal reason (except once because of a death in the family) and don't intend to start at this point of my career.

OMG, eating a whoopie pie while drinking a northern Medoc at the same time!!!! :o Isn't that the definition of heresy or blaspheme, or something like that? How about going with a sauterne?

Stefan, You can get a M-W schedule?! That sounds great, but I can't due that at my institution. It's possible under certain circumstanaces to get a T-Th; but the most common is a M-W-F.

Yeah, we have M-W, T-T, and M-W-F. My department is huge, so I can usually get whatever days I want.

I am also guessing that Stefan's seniority and international renown (which he is too modest to bring up) probably give him some pull when it comes to scheduling.

Picking the date for the convention is always problematic, as there is no one date that is completely free of conflict. We would love to have you join us one of these years (soon!) Bacchus, if you can find a way to swing it without compromising work. Just keep in mind the definition of a workaholic: someone who's pathological devotion to work interferes with their responsibilities to their drinking buddies. (JK of course, alcoholism is a serious problem and I don't mean to trivialize it).

I clicked on the link Stefan provides: a huge place by comparison to the university I'm at. Probably 5x the student population, a much larger department, and a way better football team! But that doesn't mean I won't be able to swing something. If I can get a T-Th schedule, and a holiday were to fall in the right place, or perhaps with the assistance of a grad student . . . one never knows.

Can we petition them to force all Americans to buy Northern Medocs and Whoopie Pies?
