We have made many jokes on BWE about the The Sucker and his sense of taste (or lack thereof), but he does seem to have a better sense of humor than most wine critics. We should invite him to a BWE get together. He can preach Italian wine to us and we can educate him about Bordeaux.

I agree! My opinion of him has changed completely.
He seems like he has a good sense of humor.

I got a nice chuckle when I saw that video montage Suckling made after he left the Spectator, I Am Here:

Suckling: "The ides of March are come..."

Soothsayer: "Aye, Suckling; but not gone."

Mark et al...
This is a thread that I have been pulling up each year for the past 21 years since the very first ides of March on BWE, March 15, 2000.

An annual tradition continues, through world turmoil and plague.
History repeats itself.
Many will not know of the first Ides of March on BWE, celebrated about three weeks after the creation of the site, when the reviews of one James Suckling were drawing attention here. Suckling lives on, after all these years!

After all these years, i'm surprized that we never attracted Mr. Suckling to one of our event. I'm sure we would have a great time with him.

Want it or not, BWE has something in common with Mr. Suckling: we're both product of Wine Spectator (Mr. Suckling from the magazine, and BWE from the old Wine Spectator internet wine community) but we both left Wine Spectator.

This is true!
And my opinion on James Suckling has changed greatly since the early days, I think he would be fun to have at an event.

Jim, did you ever patch things up with Suckling himself? I don't give his scores much credence but I agree he'd likely be fun to drink with.

No, David, I've kept away from him after he called me "vicious" back around 2003. I get a kick out of his YouTube videos, I check in on them every once in a while.

in those rare brutal moments of personal self honesty, I confess to myself that I am jealous of Suckling glamorous life, Tuscan villa, and Lalique's.

I compensate by putting handkerchiefs on the dog, as a kind of classy canine cravat (and droolrag / eye booger remover)

Hail BWE on our 23rd Ides of March!
Spring must must be around the corner but not tonight, a good ole' nor'easter up here.

Hail BWE on our 24th Ides of March....
We had an attempted assassination this past year but the Benevolent Dictator lives.... Oh how he lives.
Long live BWE, despite the murderous attempted assassins....

We were in Rome last summer and visited the archeological dig where the daggers flamed.
I can't account for the location of the soothsayer, though....
