Two of New Zealands premier Pinot producers. Does anyone have any experience with these. I have an oportunity to grab some of these low production wines and very little available. I've had a few NZ pinots in the past and they were more about power than elegance like the fight than seems to be going on in California as well. I certainly prefer the latter rather than the former as far as pinot goes.

Re: Help with Ata Rangi or Felton Road
Both are very good/reputable wines that are best drunk young/straight off the bat...they tend to have alluring though obvious/caricatured pinot flavours, and lack the longevity and ultimate complexity of many red burgundies. For the price tag ($40-60) you can usually find better (long term) value with burgs. I find hat NZ pinots compete well with, and compare favourably with (esp in QPR), Cali pinots.

Guys
Felton Rd has a few different labels and the reserve wines ARE long living.
I have never been that mad on Ata Rangi but it has its fans.
My view on NZ pinots is that the better wines are best at 5 years of age, and in better years, can easily live up to 10.
I find them too aggressive when young, often a bit woody, stemmy and sweet.
5 years seems to help.

Thanks for the input. Much appreciated. I hope that I didn't jump the gun by buying a six pack of the Ata Rangi. The descriptions on the web seemed to be a lighter less extracted wine.

Danny,
Ata Rangi IS lighter than some.
I would say it is not at all woody either - and plenty are.
However you may like it. Yet don;t keep it too long.
More like a village Burgundy than a GC.

Didn't sound like resounding support for the Ata Rangi so I cancelled the order today. If NZ top pint at $75 CDN/bottle won't rock my socks then it's not worth trying no matter how scarce. Thanks for the input and my wife is happy about the $450 saved on the six pack.
