Alex sent me this great link on the Maine whoopie pie in the New York Times:

I think we are going to have to have a healthy-sized batch in the JimHow room at Hotel BWE, for some after-dinner consumption with those oh-so-delicious 2005 Burgundies.

My mouth is watering already!

Jim,

I've had two whoopi pies in my life. First coutesy of JH at Tom & Gail's BWE 07 in DC and second last Fall in Portland Maine. Didn't have the same gusto washing the pie down with coffee. Leftover Lynch Bages...the loser of the evenning was my suffering companion for the evenning with the pie. Now I' can't say if it was the quality of the pie that was the difference or was it the pairing that raised the pie to the more memorable event! I guess I'll have to explore this one at another time. Maybe have to revisit Maine with wine friendly company!

Mmmm 1989 Lynch Bages with Maine whoopie pie. Does it get any better than that.

We'll have to see how the '05 Burgs match up.

Boy, I remember back in the early days of BWE, nobody knew what the hell I was talking about in my pontifications of the mighty Whoopie Pie. Now the big city whipper-snappers at the New York Times are singing the praises....

Indeed I did, Jon! I have mixed feelings that the rest of the world is discovering this chocolate and cream best kept secret treat!

I love the 89 Lynch Bages, I love whoopie pie, but together is a no no for me.

I really have a hard time mixing red wine and dessert. Prefer milk or coffee.

Nic, despite the risk of Jim issuing an edict of "No pie for you!" I have to agree with you. My experience with chocolate or other desserts and dry red wines has not been positive. I loved the whoopie pies that he brought to Tom's in DC a two years ago, but the match with the wine didn't do anything for me. It didn't clash as much as I expected, but perhaps that was due to general giddiness by the end of the evening. But I am willing to try again.

You guys are crazy!
We'll do a red Burgundy and whoopie pie demonstration back in the room after the Saturday night dinner.

Hi Jim-
thanks in advance for the whoopi pies!
Didn't we have some old port w/ the whoopi pies 2 years ago?
Old port and chocolate - yum. We'll bring some along for even more variety.
