Both very serious wines! Meyney is tannic but the tannins are ripe. Just sipped the Charmail. Smoother, more fruity, but good depth. Beautiful bouquets on both wines.

Great fruit on both of these beauties. Nothing fudged about them. You get the sense all they had to do was pick the grapes. Great purity of fruit. No need to finesse anything here. Awesome color.

Meyney and Charmail can't be wrong in that 2009 vintage.

Now, try to imagine what the 2009 Chateau Pontet Canet taste like...

Maybe I'll open a 2009 tomorrow for dinner. But tonight, in my weekly visit to the wine store, I purchased some 2011 Lapierre Morgon and some 2000 Cahors. Something light and something with some age. But next week, I should go back to 2009 Bordeaux in my weekly buying.

By the way, the 2009 come slowly to our provincial liquorstore, and they get out very quickly... No Cru Classe yet (they're coming in November), but the Poujeaux, Maucaillou, Chasse-Spleen, Tertre Roteboeuf, St-Pierre (the only Cru Classe) sold in no time... I would have like to get 1 bottle of the Tertre Roteboeuf...

I can't do it this weekend or next, Nic, dealing with big health issues with my father, I'll be in NYC next weekend. We really need to get together in Quebec province sometime this winter and uncork something interesting.

I loved both of these wines. I think HWSRN has the Meyney about right at 92, a great score, the greatest Meyney ever? This wine will age 20-30 years. I give the Charmail 91 points (HWSRN has it at 90). The fruity Charmail will drink great for 20 years. At $29 for the Meyney and $20 for Charmail, I'll buy a case of each! When I drink both of these wines, I get great wine making, ripe grapes, but no manipulation or hocus pocus. Flush and plush, but not modernized or extracted. Very impressive! Two enthusiastic thumbs up.

I definitely want to get together soon Chasse, next weekend I'm making a surgical strike into the city to see Otello at the Met. I'm only going to be in town briefly and my Saturday night is completely booked. I have to leave town real early Sunday morning. I've been spending a lot of time caring for my father, he's been really failing in recent weeks. But I'll be in town more often later this fall and winter, and we will get together and drink some fine northern Medocs. I have a rugged October schedule-wise with some tough criminal cases. But we'll definitely get together soon.

I used to buy Meyney often, but I was so disappointed with the 2000 that I have not even tried any vintage younger than that. I bought two cases of the 2000 on futures, returned the unopened case, and packed away the remaining 11 bottles. I guess I should try one in case it has developed better than I expected.
