What happened to Greysac?

Post by manton »

Ch. Greysac used to be a very reliable cheapie, or near cheapie. Lots of perfume, medium bodied, very smooth ... they seem to have changed the style. The nose is very Napa now but the palate is just sort of dead and over oaked. it really does not taste like Bordeaux any more. Kind of makes me sad.

Hi Manton,

Greysac is in the process of changing hands.
It will be bought by Jean Guyon of Rolland de By and Haut Condissas.

I think you'll be seeing a marked improvement soon.

All the best,
Alex R.

That would be nice! Any idea which will be the first vintages to look for?

I drank a number of the 2005 and 2006 Greysac. The 05 was a bit inconsistent, but very good at its best. The 06 however I thought was great the 3 or 4 times I had it. Classic style, not over-oaked, with good structure and balance and great QPR. My notes should be on here.

We used to drink Greysac often but have not for some years now. Last night we went to a CD release party after dinner. The wine list contained mostly Hilton junk and no vintages were listed, so we opted for the $30 Greysac. It was an '03, which made me nervous, but in fact the wine was pretty good and definitely Bordeaux. I could see drinking the wine at home even if it is not in the same league as the '96 Sociando Mallet we had drunk at dinner.

BTW, we bought 5 copies of the new CD "I got it bad" by the Greg Tivis Trio featuring Kelsey Taylor. It is a welcome addition to our American Songbook collection. You can hear excerpts at gregtivis.com.

I have quite a bit of the 2005 and I don't love it. I had one bottle of the 06 which I barely remember. Should try again I guess.
