Michael-P moves from Dubai to London - Oct 2012

Post by Michael-P »

Yes indeed, from the hot desert to the land of grey skies, rain and original home of the non-French Bordeaux wine trade. Now on my way home from work I can walk into a wine shop and buy realistically retail priced wine for dinner like normal people. And now I can easily go to Paris or even Bordeaux for a weekend!

Looking forward to connecting with London BWEers.

Congratulations Michael. I don't know why, but I have the feeling London will fit you better.

Marie-Claude is dreaming since a long time to go to London. I'll make a deal with you : I let you a years to get installed correctly, and we'll go visit you after. You'll kindergarden our 3 kids while we visit London...

Nice. I am in London a lot more than I am in Dubai. Coming back to SF anytime soon?

Hi Michael,

That's great news!
First thing, I suggest you sign up on Tom Cannavan's Wine Pages: http://www.wine-pages.com/cgi-bin2/ulti ... aysPrune=0
The guys meet up regularly, especially at the Ledbury: http://www.theledbury.com/
Ian Amstadt and Jonathan Beagle who post here regularly live in London (when they're not in America, Japon, or elsewhere!).

Bordeaux is an hour and a half flight from Gatwick or Luton (the latter has really cheap flights).

Hope to see you soon one way or another,
All the best,
Alex

Sounds great Michael. A step closer to home but maybe more important to a more liberal society. Good luck with your new endeavours and will hopefully see you in Dallas.

Michael, I understand that the wine shops in London are a bit better than those in Dubai. You can check out this place in Mayfair:

I've heard it's amazing. You can stock up on 1811 Yquem.

Sure can. There is a very active wine tasting/dinners/lunching community in London.
Tomorrow night we have a Bordeaux versus California shootout which will make the Obama Romney debate look like a Sunday picnic. The Judgement of London, 2012.

It's like going to a candy store. You can look but you can't touch until all your pocket money has been saved up. ;)

Sorry guys, it took me a little more time to get settled than I thought. For example, surprisingly it takes about 2 weeks to get internet at home, whereas Dubai was about 1 day. And I only moved into my apartment (Maida Vale) 2 weeks ago, so finally I can easily communicate with the world (work is pretty encompassing during the day and we work late sometimes, often 8p and recently a few times to 11p. And there is the new job to settle into as well!

Anyway, I am keen to get involved in London, even though I have no wine here yet, so I'll send Jonathan a PM to start.

Last weekend I was wandering around seeing the old cars (about 1900-1915 era) on Sat that run in the London to Brighton race and as it got nearer to dinner, I thought I should find some wine for that night's dinner. Just like most wine purchases in the world! Stopped into the conseierge at Claridges and they recommended, you guessed it, Hedonism. Just a few blocks away. And it was amazing. multiple 27L bottles of various Bordeaux, Port, etc, the endless collection of Yquem, and on. A whole room just for Sine Qua Non. I spent an hour or more looking at everything. Sadly they don't have much in the GBP 30 price range, but some of the more BWE type stuff was not too badly priced for retail.

BD, I rented a 2 bed 2 bath place just to entice guests, so please plan your visit.

SF Ed - I'll be in SF Christmas in case you and Lisa are around and available?

Michael, Lucie and I will be in Berkeley for Xmas. It would be great to get together with you and some of the bay area BWEers.
