1978 Chateau Calon-Ségur; 3eme Classé, St. Estephe
plummy, cranberries fruit with lots of freshness and earthy herby notes. Fresh, minty, tobacco and cedar but with some sous bois, wet soil, St. Estephe grumpiness. Bitters, tea, leather, smoked berries, some cassis lingers. Really good, old school drinking claret, with decent length. 71/100

Wish I had a bunch of this old school claret to drink now. You described a classic. Hard to believe how recent the modern style really is with
the exception of the 82's which created a roar. I will make it a point to buy older vintages if I can find them. Good job. JM

Calon Ségur just changed hands.
Since the previous owner died, Mme Capbern-Gasqueton, two years ago, a conscious effort has been made to change the style, to make the wine more "aimable" in its youth.
I discovered this when tasting the past two vintages when I visited the château in March.

Perhaps a wine like the 1978 will no longer exist.

In any event, I generally find the 78s dried out a long time ago, but am willing to believe this was quite enjoyable :-).

Je Pense que c'est la goutte anglais!!

I had a small tipple of this at a shop called the Sampler last week.
In the UK we can find older wines, but they can be hit and miss generally.

I'm quite a fan of the 78 style of wine generally and some of them are truly magical.
