1999 Brane Cantenac

Post by mike reff »

Popped and poured.

Decent aromas on the nose, some stewy, herbaceous odors. Some tannins and subtle hints of fruit but otherwise seems rather flat. Drink up.

We drank this wine as part of a virtual live tasting here on BWE a few years back.
I think we almost unanimously agreed it is a flawed wine.

Probably, it does lack a certain structure but I am not sure that it is flawed. Margaux was weak as a whole in 1999 dont you agree?

Hmm really? I thought Margaux was the strongest appellation on the left bank in 1999, although I personally only recall having Chateau Margaux, Palmer and d'Issan (in addition to Brane Cantenac), both of which were stunning. I remember in our virtual live tasting everyone basically stopped drinking the Brane Cantenac, it was literally undrinkable. It may have rebounded a year or two later, I think we had some decent experiences with it afterwards.
