2004 Ch. Mongravey, Margaux

Post by AlexR »

This was a pleasant experience for me today (Sunday lunch).

Sometimes simple roast chicken - free range bird - can be just wonderful.
It was even better today with this wine, a cru Bourgeois in Arsac, not far from Ch. du Tertre.

I've had this wine before and it was nothing special, but they have clearly progressed.

The wine now comes in a fancy bottle and they're changed their label.

The color was remarkably deep and the nose was on the modern side, but fruity and attractive. It was rich and broad shouldered, with plenty of oomph and a long aftertaste (black cherry). I'd not have picked it as a Margaux blind but, then again, "typicité" is not a religion to me... I thought this wine would be in its prime now, but I was wrong. It'll be even better in a few years.
I honestly think that in a line-up of great growths from the appellation, it would not be the odd man out.

This is not an expensive wine, and if recent vintages are on a par with this, I would recommend it.

Best regards,
Alex R.
