Lemming I Remain: 2010 GPL for $80

Neal Martin's score of 97 pts and an $80 pricetag in an email today put me over the edge-- I bought 4 bottles of the 2010 GPL.

My total 2010 haul so far, with a mean critic score across Parker-Suckling-WS-Tanzer-and-N.Martin (point chaser than I am)...

Branaire-Ducru- 3 bottles, mean critic score = 93.3pts
Brane Cantenac- 3 bottles, mean critic score = 94pts
La Dominique- 6 half-bottles, mean critic score = 92.2pts
d'Issan- 7 bottles, mean critic score = 93.3pts
Grand Puy Lacoste- 4 bottles, mean critic score = 94.4pts
Talbot- 3 bottles, mean critic score = 90.3pts

Most of those look like wines I'd buy, if I were still buying Bordeaux. I guess I'll just have to live vicariously through you youngsters. $80 for GPL sounds like a good deal Patrick.

I wasn't planning on buying any 2010s, David, but I've slowly been worn down. Ian's notes from a London tasting were the first big blow to my resolve, coupled with PremierCru's big discounts (the 2010 d'Issan was $46 in one of their sales).

The good thing is, I know I like all of these chateau's styles in recent times up through the 2005 vintage – except for La Dominique which I don't think I've ever tasted later than the 1990 vintage. So, I'm optimistic I'll enjoy these when I hit 60.

GPL is my biggest 2010 purchase so far. If you're buying bordeaux in this price range and want to buy some '10s, this is perhaps the top wine to consider. I paid $89 on futures almost two years ago and am happy with the purchase -- $80 is a fantastic price. I've loved the three bottles of '05 GPL I've had and this looks to be as good or better.

Looks good, though I must say I was not overly impressed by the cantenac when I tasted it...I hope it comes around! But the gpl...oh yes

I have a case of the 05, and am very glad I do. The 09 is so expensive here I simply refuse to buy it. Instead, I'll go with its stable mate, Haut Batailley, which is 1/3 the price, but by all reports very near it in quality.

You did well Patrick. These wines are simply too good to pass up. Funny you should mention your purchases but this week I bought cases of Leoville Barton, Branaire Ducru and a six pack of La Conseillante. I also intend to buy a case each of Gruaud Larose and Pape Clement, the latter marking a most welcome return to a more balanced and finessed style. I think all of these producers made their best ever wines. I am financing these purchases by selling a case of Ch. Latour 1999.

In my rankings all of these wines were 'extraordinary' as opposed to just 'magnificent.' I had GPL and La Dominique in the latter category. Dominique would be the next on my list. Regarding GPL, you won't go wrong at that price. I am not sure which I prefer the 09 or the 10. The former is a little more exuberant. But GPL really has been a stalwart from that 1978 we tried in 2006, the 1982 last year, through the 1990, 1995, 1996, 2000, 20005, 2006 and now 09 and 10. Arguably with Leoville Barton one of the most consistent estates in Bordeaux. However, perhaps more than any other the '10 Leoville Barton really blew me away.

GPL 2010 is one of the real star performers of the vintage, punching well above its weight. The other that comes to mind, and a lower price point, is Gloria. Both blew me away when tasted at the primeurs, and they're doing the same thing now that they're in bottle.

DAMN YOU AND PC, BLANQUITO!!!

I just popped my 2010 cherry! ;)

I swore to hold off given the varying opinions on this vintage and the prices, hoping to taste first, but GPL is an easy purchase for me, especially at $80. That's what I paid for the '09. Love this estate.

I also swiped some Talbot at that crazy price of $40. Yea, the notes read a bit modern on this historically old-school wine, but I guess at $40 I'm willing to take a flyer.

Now the Gloria . . . .

I doubled-down, and now Dr. Chris is on my $hit li$t.

2010 Gloria $49.99 at Gary's.

Wake at 7:20 a bit hung over. Grab a coffee, surf the web. Read this thread, get excited, and voila, in 10 minutes spend lots of hard-earn coin. I need help.

The good thing is, I have always loved all 3 of these estates, the wines seem very promising, and the prices were totally acceptable.

It's 8:03 now. Time to hit the toilet, shower and get ready for work. With a smile on my face . . . .

My cherry has been popped.

Agree with Chris....Gloria was very nice, GPL is fantastic as is ts stable mates

The right now stars (meaning u can drink these now) showstoppers were leoville poyferre and pape clement(these were silk freaks) close was the baron....but these are so accessible now that I'm not sure their aging potential..Chris what did u think?

Cantemerle was a very good qpr as was marsalette(smokey pessac juice) in fact the entire canon la gaff. stable was fantastic and by far the sexiest 2010 exotic spice delight of the night...clos l'oratoire (not everyone will like this 'drop your panties' sex juice)

09 Gloria is very nice too, so don't pass it by if there's any in your local store still, esp.if the "price is right."

'10 CLG was fantastic at last month's UGC, one of the top wines of the night - as you say, very spicy, sexy and exotic.

Ok, I added a 6-pack of 2010 Gloria half-bottles to my list! Thanks, Chris, geesh. :)

The most exciting young Bordeaux I've tried in the last few years was the 2005 Grand Puy Lacoste. Now that said, I haven't started opening any 2009s yet nor most of the big guns from 2005s, but I cracked a half bottle of the 05 GPL on a whim and was blown away. Due to that bottle, I went pretty long on the 09 GPL and now the 10 GPL. It has become my go-to chateau, supplanting Sociando-Mallet. Ian, I am with you on chateau like Pontet-Canet not getting the pulse going (as good as it is) the way a wine like the GPL does. It must be all of those outstanding bottles tasted in recent years: the 78, 82, 95, 96, 00 and 05 (I've never had the 90). Part of this is also a belief that GPL hasn't lost its bearings in the post-modern wine world, there's something oddly reassuring when it drops the ball like it did in 2003 that it hasn't lost its soul, that it remains a true old-school Pauillac.

DavidG, I am the ghost of enablement-present! Come over into the light of 2010, Daaavid! Think of your awesome 82 GPL and the great tasting room in the sky.

Think of the 2010 Cantemerle, Haut-Batailley, Gloria, La Lagune, Domaine du Chevalier Rouge and so many other beautiful, classic and above all, reasonably-priced Bordeaux bottles adorning your shelves! From the GREATEST vintage in history, think Daaaavid of these inky masterpieces for sale at a retailer near you before Parker's scores (coming any day) send prices through the roof!

Daaavvviiiiddd, do not fight the inevitable, come join us, come into the warm, embracing light of 2010 Bordeaux Wine Enthusiasts. Join the few, the proud, the broke.

Judging by the pile of wine I left in Salida, and more scattered about with friends, I'll be returning someday.

I'm not afraid of this thread. I did buy some Talbot and previously Cantemerle just to have my hand in the game. But I also recall that pile of wine is front-loaded with recent vintages, and even two-three years ago I lamented of their immaturity and started back-buying judiciously to have some wines that at least had a shot to catch up to my own "incessant" advancing maturity.

Having said that, I encourage others to "buy, buy, buy!" those '10s.

So, did anyone give the 08 GPL a try? Just wondering if it's anywhere near the vintages of the decade?

Actually this was not the wine I was referring to, it's the clos l'oratoire...this was the panty dropper

The CLG was much tighter

At the Los Angeles UGC, '10 CLG was pretty open -- lovely spices, nice concentration and balance -- it was one of my top three wines of the tasting.

Haven't tried '10 Clos l'Oratoire but I loved '05 and bought a bunch. Incredibly sexy wine.

It showed really well at last month's UGC tasting -- one of my top 6-8 wines of the tasting. I'd be all over it at $60.

Hey I looked at the MacArthur's site for the first time in a long time and I noticed to my pleasant surprise that they now again ship to Maine after a period of years of not doing so. I'm trying to figure out whether their 2009 Lanessan is in stock or is still prearrival.

I think we need to mug Gerry and have him tell us where the 2010 Gruaud Larose is in stock for $60, I don't see anything listed on the NH site.

I think we split a case of '08 Gruaud, but I still haven't paid you for it or collected it. We could do it again with the '10... gotta find that source for $60, but it can't be in stock already.

I bought '09 Lanessan from MacArthur for $21 and have it in the cellar, so it must be in stock there unless they ran out and reloaded.
