2006 Cantemerle, 1995 Mouton

Post by AlexR »

Hi,

A friend asked my wife and me to dinner last night. Since his wife works at Mouton, he sometimes spoils me :-).
The 95 was still tannic and tight. Not as a drum, but the wine clearly needs years to soften.
It went very well with duck confit and the nose was lovely (blackcurrant, cedar...).

As enjoyable as this was, the revelation of the evening was a 2006 Cantemerle served blind.
It was delcious, and the only criticism I'd have is the shortness of the aftertaste.
It was more full-bodied than any Cantermerle I've ever had, which leads me to believe their house style may have changed.
I thought it was a Pauillac because of the lead pencil aromas on the bouquet.
I'll be interested to try other recent vintages of this 5th growth.
The 2010 is currently on sale at under 27 euros.

I also liked the 2006 Château Cantemerle, and still have one or two bottle around.

In the last years, I think I had the 1989, 1995, 1996, 2003, 2005 and 2006 Cantemerle and liked them all, for their genuine Bordeaux character, instead of being an over concentrated, or over ripe, or over oaky style like some other.

But the major quality of that wine, it drinks well, this wine disappear quickly when you have a bottle on the table, and this is almost always the best way to evaluate is a wine is appreciated.

I just bought a six pack of the 2010 even though I'm buying very little these days.

Cantemerle always rocks the boat, but I find it kind of unapproachable in youth. Is the 2006 coming 'round recently?

Like many 2006s, the Cantemerle was quite enjoyable at this stage: sleek, on the light side, seductive.
Not great power and not very long on the finish, but classic and elegant.
By no means infanticide.
